On a rain-filled Sunday afternoon, the Eagles defeated the San Francisco 49ers 33-10. Philadelphia took a 17-0 lead into halftime and never looked back allowing, quarterback Carson Wentz to watch the final five minutes of the game from the sidelines.
Wentz finished the afternoon 18-of-32 for 211 yards and two touchdowns. Four different Eagles scored touchdowns: wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, tight end Zach Ertz, running back LeGarrette Blount, and cornerback Jalen Mills who nabbed his first career interception return for a score.
The defense was active throughout the game. Defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, defensive end Brandon Graham, defensive end Vinny Curry, and linebacker Mychal Kendricks all came away with sacks on quarterback C.J. Beathard. Rookie defensive end Derek Barnett blocked a field goal attempt and safety Rodney McLeod earned his first interception of the season.
The Eagles have won six straight and hold on to the NFL's best record at 7-1.
"Any time you win a game in this league, it's a special thing. They're hard to come by. It's things that we talk about during the week that we just can't have any let downs," head coach Doug Pederson said after the win. "The guys really respond to that. Obviously, it pretty much rained the whole game. It's going to maybe knock you off just a little bit with the forecast, with the weather, but guys really responded, and did an outstanding job all game long. And to score 33 (points) like that, it was pretty impressive for them."
After just a field goal in the first 15 minutes, the Eagles put up 14 points in the second quarter. Wentz and Ertz connected for the game's first touchdown on a 1-yard throw. It was Ertz's sixth touchdown of the year, and all of them have come in the red zone. Later, Mills snatched his third interception of the season and took it 37 yards to the house for a touchdown.
The Eagles couldn't keep the 49ers scoreless in the third quarter. Wentz had his pass intended for wide receiver Mack Hollins intercepted by cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon. Beathard shoveled the ball to running back Matt Breida for a 21-yard touchdown connection that narrowed the Philadelphia lead to 20-7.
Wentz quickly bounced back on the next drive hitting Jeffery for a 53-yard touchdown. The score was Jeffery's third touchdown on the year which put the Eagles up 26-7. Kicker Jake Elliott nailed a franchise-record fifth 50-yard field goal in a single season when he knocked in a 51-yarder midway through the quarter.
To start the fourth, Barnett followed up last week's strong performance with a blocked field goal and recovery giving the ball back to Philadelphia at its own 38 yard-line. Blount polished off the ensuing Eagles drive when he darted 12 yards to end zone for a touchdown to put the Eagles up 33-7. The 49ers converted a field goal late to make the final score 33-10.
The Eagles will play at Lincoln Financial Field next Sunday against the Denver Broncos.
"Being 7-1, we like that. It's a good place to be. We just have to keep building," Wentz said. "There's a lot of things that we have to keep cleaning up. I know personally it's the same way, both physically and then mentally, with some of the protection things tonight. We just have to keep building, keep building. But 7-1, that's a good place to be."
The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 33-10,to advance to 7-1 on the season.
