Akers Named To All-Decade Team

Placekicker David Akers has been named the NFL's All-Decade team from 2000-2009, the NFL will announce on Sunday during ESPN's *Sunday NFL Countdown *at 5:30 p.m., prior to the Pro Bowl game. Akers, the leading scorer in franchise history, is the only current Eagle so honored. Safety Brian Dawkins, who played with the Eagles through 2008, was also named to the team.

Said Akers: "It is obviously a huge honor just to be have that length of time to be able to be looked at in that high regard is surreal to me. I couldn't have done it without the Mike Bartrums, the Koy Detmers, the Jon Dorenboses, the Sav Roccas and great offensive lines and coaches helping me along the way. The Eagles have always believed in me and I am truly grateful for that."

Akers has maintained a tremendous physical regiman throughout the years and has kept his leg strength extremely strong. He is in Miami preparing for the Pro Bowl, and he knows that to stay at a high level, he must continue to work hard and reward the trust the Eagles have had in him over the years.

"A lot of it goes to the consistency of the team, and of the team having confidence in me, from Mr. Lurie and Andy Reid on down. It keeps your confidence up, if you know what I mean," he said. "I have worked extremely hard over the years and I will continue to do so. I would like to play many more years with the Eagles. That would be a great, great thing."

As for the Pro Bowl, his fourth, Akers is having a blast in Miami.

"It's definitely different than Hawaii, that's for sure," said Akers, "but I feel so blessed to be here, to be around so much great talent. It's great to spend the morning with the team and then the rest of the day with the family, the wife and kids, how can you possibly do anything but love that?"

Said Dawkins, now a member of the Denver Broncos: "This is a tremendous honor for me to be recognized as one of the best out of all the safeties who have played in the NFL this decade. To know I've been able to do the things I've been able to do, with the help of my teammates, to earn a spot on the league's All-Decade Team means a lot."

The NFL All-Decade teams are chosen every 10 years by the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee members. The 2000s mark the ninth All-Decade team to be selected in NFL history.
