Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha has been named a finalist for the Bart Starr Award, which honors the NFL player who "best exemplifies outstanding character and leadership in the home, on the field and in the community." The other finalists also reside in the NFC East in Dallas's Jason Witten and Washington's London Fletcher. The award will be handed out at the 2012 Super Bowl Breakfast on February 4 in Indianapolis.
The award is named after Pro Football Hall of Fame and Super Bowl MVP quarterback Bart Starr. The six-time Pro Bowl quarterback was the NFL's Man of the Year (now the Walter Payton Award) in 1969. He was also the first winner of the Byron Whizzer White Award, which is earned based on professionalism and citizenship. Starr will be on hand to personally give the award.
Asomugha and his family formed The Asomugha Foundation in 2005 to have a positive impact on disadvantaged youth in the United States and the underprivileged orphans and widows in Africa through education and empowerment. The foundation comprises two primary programs - the Asomugha College Tour for Scholars (ACTS) and Orphans and Widows in Need (OWIN).
ACTS is an annual college tour and mentoring program that provides high-achieving high school students with the opportunity to visit college campuses across the country. OWIN provides aid to a growing population of widows and orphans in Africa and positions them for economic success and independence through education, spiritual guidance and vocational training. The Bart Starr Award was won last year by New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees. Former Eagles wide receiver Irving Fryar won the award in 1998. Other former Eagles including cornerback Troy Vincent and defensive end Reggie White, were bestowed the honor while playing for other teams.
