The Eagles acquired running back Jay Ajayi from the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday in exchange for a 2018 fourth-round draft pick.
In seven games this season, Ajayi has rushed for 465 yards on 138 carries. The third-year back out of Boise State (a fifth-round pick) had a career year in 2016, earning Pro Bowl honors after rushing for 1,272 yards including consecutive games with at least 200 rushing yards in Weeks 5 and 6. He finished the season ranked fourth in the league in rushing yards and seventh in yards per carry (4.9). He also scored eight touchdowns on the ground.
For his career, Ajayi has 1,924 rushing yards on 447 carries and nine touchdowns. He also has 48 career catches for an additional 308 yards.
The Eagles had a look at Ajayi when the Dolphins came to Philadelphia for joint practices during Training Camp. Ajayi ran for 53 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns against the Eagles in the preseason contest.
Ajayi joins an Eagles backfield that already ranks fifth in the NFL in rushing yards per game.
To make room for Ajayi, the Eagles placed linebacker Jordan Hicks, who is out for the remainder of the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon, on Injured Reserved.Â
