We're all following it closely. I don't have answers, but let's go through some of the top-level stories from Sunday's win over Washington and then the what's-next? scenarios that I know you are thinking about ...
- The defense wasn't great against Washington, allowing 377 total net yards, but Juan Castillo's crew pitched an 0-for-3 shutout in the red zone and took advantage of just enough Redskins futility to have another outstanding statistical day. The Eagles allowed 10 points, and in the last four games permitted just 11.5 points per game. It's been a remarkable turnaround for Castillo and Co., and, yeah, I understand that the four offenses the Eagles beat weren't top-shelf groups, it's still the NFL and you still have to perform.
- Individually, safety Jaiquawn Jarrett was up and down in his second start. He missed a couple of tackles in the open field, and he needs to get better there. He was in coverage on a 22-yard completion to tight end Logan Paulsen. But Jarrett also seemed to improve as the game went along and we'll see how the coaches grade him in the tape review.
- Right tackle Todd Herremans had a lot of trouble against Brian Orakpo, and when Orakpo went off the field with a shoulder injury and missed the second half, the Eagles opened up offensively. The Eagles had just 145 total net yards in the first half when Orakpo played. They gained 245 yards in the second half, along with 24 points.
- Michael Vick was 24 of 39 passing. He was sacked twice. He ran once, a designed play in the red zone that gained 3 yards. So here's what I see: Vick dropped back 42 times and ran once when it was designed. Clearly, he is working very hard to improve his performance in the pocket, avoid hits and keep himself healthy. Good job. Let's see what an entire offseason does for Vick heading into 2012.
- Herremans said that Howard Mudd told him that Mudd was returning for 2012. That's great to hear. The offensive line has a chance to be very, very strong next year. Mudd is an outstanding coaching.
- Ronnie Brown just doesn't have the quickness to help this offensive running game. With LeSean McCoy resting his ankle, Brown had just 6 carries and 14 yards. Rookie Dion Lewis, who should have had a few more carries this season, carried 8 times for 59 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter when the Eagles looked to ice the clock. Lewis is the No. 2 back next and is an excellent talent.
- The defensive line was dominating against quarterback Rex Grossman, who had no time to throw the football. The Eagles led the league with 50 quarterback sacks. Jason Babin led the way with 18 and Trent Cole added 11.
- Casey Matthews replaced Jamar Chaney at middle linebacker early and had some troubles against the run. He is a better player in space than he is having to get off a block in the box. Against the screen, Matthews is terrific. He isn't there yet as a three-down middle linebacker.
- Alex Henery finished the season with 16 straight successful field goals made and he nailed 24 of 27 field goals this season. He had a great, great, great rookie season. Chas Henry finished strong, too, averaging 50.3 gross and 45.5 yards against Washington.
- Nice job, Chad Hall. Super effort on the touchdown catch and run and also a good job on special teams. The kid is an NFL player. Whether he's here next year, who knows? Hall is a year-to-year question mark. But he can play in the league and he is an asset to any team.
- DeSean Jackson handled his post-game media time with class and a "Go Eagles" at the very end. I think it's 50/50 as to whether he returns. Jackson showed his big-play ability with the 62-yard catch and run from Vick as Washington kept two defenders deep against him all game.
- Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie again played very well with his coverage and the way he fared against the run. He deserves to be a starter next season.
- Nate Allen had some rough patches at times this year, but he came on strong. Look for him to take a huge leap next season. Allen had a wonderful diving interception early against Washington and buzzed around the football all game.
- Andy Reid challenged plays 12 times and won 10 of those challenges this season.
- Speaking of Reid, he wouldn't talk about his future after the game, instead hoping to enjoy the win. Reid isn't going anywhere. Or, let's say: I would be shocked and stunned if he moved on.
- The offense turned the ball over 38 times, including Vick's poor decision on a pass that was intercepted at the Washington 2-yard line on Sunday. Opponents scored 86 points off of those turnovers this season.
- Defensive tackle Derek Landri had a tackle for a loss and a blocked field goal in the win. Is there a way to keep him around next season, even with Antonio Dixon coming back from injury?
