The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders 24 to 22 at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday night after successfully stopping a two-point conversion by the Commanders late in the fourth quarter. The Eagles defense put the pressure on Jayden Daniels all night, forcing multiple throw-aways.

Jalen Hurts performed well in the new offense throwing for three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Dallas Goedert accounted for two of the Eagles' touchdowns while Dontayvion Wicks got a touchdown in his debut for the Eagles.

The Eagles start the season 1-0 while the Commanders fall to 0-1.

Standout Players for the Eagles

QB Jalen Hurts

QB1 for the Eagles completed 14 of 25 attempts for 203 yards and three touchdowns through the air. Hurts' legs played a big role in the win, scrambling on multiple plays for first downs and key yards, averaging 6.6 yards per rush with 46 yards on 7 attempts.

"Jalen has worked extremely hard at that portion of his game," Nick Sirianni said after the game. "He really can throw. He just puts the ball on the money in those situations, which helps you be explosive. On the first one to [WR] Tay [Wicks], the one to DeVonta, he's worked at it. Obviously, highly talented person and a highly talented football player, but there is no secret to this. The plays that are made on Sunday were made because of the work that was put in in OTAs, in the offseason, in training camp. That happens Wednesday through Friday. There is no secret there. It takes what it takes and he's worked his [butt] off on that."

TE Dallas Goedert

Not only did Goedert open the scoring for the Eagles, he was also responsible for the 43-yard game-winning touchdown. Goedert lead the Eagles in receiving yards with 77 yards on four receptions.

"Obviously you want to win the first game of the year," Goedert said after the win. "It's even bigger against the division opponent because you only get, what, six of those a year? So, starting off (with) one of those is always fun. Being a division opponent makes it even a little bit sweeter."

Head Coach Nick Sirianni praised his ninth-year tight end after the game.

"Dallas is a phenomenal playmaker who, in my six years with him, just has always made plays in really big moments. Another two touchdowns for him. He brings it every day. I think that we had those calls called in those situations and him and Jalen went out and made a play," Sirianni said.

LB Zack Baun

The All-Pro linebacker was everywhere for the Eagles, leading both teams with 12 total tackles. Baun also recorded a tackle for loss and two passes defended. In the third quarter, Baun tackled Rashaad White from behind on third down, forcing a Commanders punt on a crucial drive for both teams.

According to Next Gen Stats, Zack Baun allowed 3 catches for -2 yards on 6 targets. Since 2025, he is one of only two players to be targeted 5+ times and allow negative yards in a game, joining Denzel Ward.

"Really good to be back out there. First game comes with a lot of unknowns, especially with the new coordinator, don't necessarily know what they're going to run and it comes down to fundamentals and technique." Baun said of facing Washington's offense. "There were good things and bad things and I'm excited to watch the film."

WR Dontayvion Wicks

Dontayvion Wicks made his two catches count in his debut. His first official catch in an Eagles uniform came late in the first-quarter on a 64-yard catch and run deep downfield, setting up a touchdown for Dallas Goedert.

"Great finish by him, way to bring that in," Jalen Hurts said of his wide receiver. "That was a big moment in the game to establish ourselves a bit. I think there's an opportunity to grow and be able to maintain that level of attack, but I can't say enough on how he showed up, played, and executed. "

Later in the second quarter, Wicks used Mike Sainristil's inside leverage to his advantage, breaking outside for a wide open touchdown in the back of the end zone.

"As soon as I broke, I just ran out," Wicks said while describing his touchdown. "I knew (me being open) was a possibility, a high possibility because he (Sainristil) had inside leverage and I had an outbreaking route."

Saquon Barkley praised his new teammate after the game.

"I tried to tell you," Barkley said of Wicks' debut. "He had a route in practice and he just broke off a DB. And I was just like, 'Wow, you're good at football.' So happy for him. I got him a little bit on the big one, you got to find a way to get in the end zone. That's the level I think he can take it to and he found a way to get in the end zone a drive or two later."
