Cory Undlin signed on as the Eagles defensive backs coach in the 2015 offseason following a three-year stint with the Denver Broncos where he served as the defensive quality control coach in 2012 and the defensive backs coach from 2013-14.
During Philadelphia's 2017 Super Bowl LII-winning campaign, the Eagles defense produced the fourth-most takeaways in the league (31) and ranked third in third-down defense (32.2%). On the year, Philadelphia's secondary gave up 24 touchdown receptions, which marks the fewest touchdowns surrendered by an Eagles defense since 2008 (19).
After helping Eagles S Malcolm Jenkins earn his first Pro Bowl nod in 2015, Undlin helped assimilate free-agent signee Rodney McLeod to the Eagles defense in 2016. In his first season in Philadelphia, McLeod led the defense with a career-high 117 tackles, while also posting career highs in interceptions (three) and passes defensed (10). Jenkins followed up his Pro Bowl season with two interceptions for touchdowns in 2016, becoming the fourth player in franchise history to produce multiple INT-TDs in a single season.
In 2015, Undlin's first year in Philadelphia, the Eagles defense ranked 10th in the NFL in total takeaways (26) and interceptions (15). Undlin's secondary produced two key defensive players in safeties Jenkins and Walter Thurmond. Jenkins earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl in 2015 after posting career and team highs in tackles (120), passes defensed (15) and forced fumbles (three). Thurmond, who transitioned from cornerback to safety during the 2015 offseason with the help of Undlin's guidance, started all 16 games and notched career highs in tackles (76), interceptions (three), sacks (two) and forced fumbles (two).
In Denver, the club's defense in 2014 finished the regular season ranked third in overall defense where Undlin coached a Broncos secondary that boasted Pro Bowlers CB Chris Harris Jr., CB Aqib Talib and S T.J. Ward. The trio of Pro Bowlers, along with starting S Rahim Moore, combined for 13 interceptions, including two that Talib returned for touchdowns. Denver ranked first in the NFL in opponent's yards per attempt (6.02) and tied for third in explosive passes against (41).
The 2013 version of the Broncos secondary overcame significant injuries to starting CB Champ Bailey and Moore, ultimately reaching Super Bowl XLVIII.
In 2012, Undlin worked with a Denver defense that finished third in the NFL against the pass and was the only unit in the league that did not allow a 300-yard passer.
Prior to his time in Denver, Undlin spent three years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, first as a defensive assistant in 2009, then as the defensive backs coach from 2010-11. In 2011, the Jaguars defense allowed just two 300-yard passers and finished tied for second in the NFL after surrendering just 43 pass plays of 20-plus yards.
Undlin spent four seasons with the Cleveland Browns, starting as the team's defensive quality control coach (2005-06) before being named the secondary/assistant special teams coach in 2007 and the defensive backs coach in 2008. Under his tutelage in 2008, the Browns defense finished second in the league with 23 interceptions.
Undlin entered the NFL with the New England Patriots in 2004 and worked with the secondary as a defensive assistant. The 2004 Patriots finished the regular season with a 14-2 record and went on to defeat the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX.
Before transitioning to the professional game, Undlin spent seven years working in the collegiate ranks. His coaching career began in 1998 at his alma mater, California Lutheran, where he played defensive back from 1990-94 and recorded 12 career interceptions, the third-highest total in school history. Undlin coached the Kingsmen's linebackers from 1998-2000 before being promoted to defensive coordinator (2000), a position that he held through 2002. After leaving California Lutheran, Undlin spent two seasons (2002-03) coaching the defensive backs as a graduate assistant with Fresno State.
A native of Sauk Centre, MN, Undlin and his wife, Amy, have a son, Caden, and two daughters, Brooke and Taylor.
