Spadaro: Checking in on the Eagles' 2024 Draft picks

The moment isn't too big for them. The top of the 2024 Eagles NFL Draft Class has acquitted itself nicely thus far in Training Camp, staying focused, absorbing every bit of the volumes of information thrown at them and dedicating themselves to the playbook.

There are steps to be taken, of course, and a long way to go before the regular season begins, but the early returns are promising for the top of the 2024 Draft Class. Here is an update on that group of players …

CB Quinyon Mitchell, Round 1

Mitchell has loved every bit of the step up in class at the NFL level, relishing the reps he takes against star wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. The battles are making him a better football player.

"I am just grinding right now, moving up the depth chart, and competing out there every day," Mitchell said. "It's fun going out there every day against the best of the best and I know that's making me a better player.

"I take the meeting rooms and the off-the-field time very seriously. Every rep matters whether it's a high-speed practice or a walkthrough or a meeting. You want to play fast when you're out there."

Mitchell has played both inside and outside at cornerback and he's taken the task of learning the entire defense seriously. Technique is a huge part of the game at the NFL level, so the ability to combine tight technique with great athletic talent is Mitchell's goal.

So is making an impact as early in his career as possible.

"I love being out there on the field helping this defense. I stay late here watching film with Cooper (DeJean) and we know how important that is, how much we have to learn," he said. "Slay has been great, a true mentor, and I've asked him a lot of questions and I've watched him and JB (James Bradberry) and Avonte (Maddox) and they have all helped me a great deal. I'm already a much better player than I was when I got here and I know I have a long way to go."

CB Cooper DeJean, Round 2

DeJean suffered a hamstring injury prior to Training Camp and is recovering from that and has not yet participated in Training Camp on-field practices. He's been able to watch film and attend meetings and learn the defense that way, so his goal is to make that transition onto the field when he's ready to go physically.

The Eagles put the pads on for the first time at this year's Training Camp on Tuesday. Check out these exclusive photos as the intensity and competition ramps up to another level.

DE Jalyx Hunt, Round 3

From Cornell to Houston Christian to the NFL, the jumps are significant for defensive end Jalyx Hunt. He isn't looking at this as a season in training. He has jumped right into the fray with the intention of going all out every day and seeing where things stand.

So far, Hunt has been able to enjoy the ride.

"It's dope. It's cool. Really embracing it and I'm working on attention to detail, just learning," Hunt said. "I'm learning to play at this level, learning the scheme, and how to work within it. It's just a dope experience."

Hunt has shown – and an emphasis that he has had – is an explosive get-off at the snap of the football. He comes off the edge like a rocket and as he builds his repertoire playing with such a high motor, Hunt hopes to be a difference-maker in the defense.

How long will that take? That's the big question, so the only thing to do is work on a better game every single day.

"Using my hands is something I really want to improve. I'm a physical guy and I have used that in the past, but you need more at this level," he said. "You have to be a complete player and to do that you have to be able to put in the detail a lot more than in college. I've stopped being so reactive and I have to dictate what they do based on my get-off. Get-off. Get-off. Get-off."

RB Will Shipley, Round 4

He is in a room with Saquon Barkley, a player whom he watched in awe in Barkley's seasons with the New York Giants, and now they are teammates in the same room learning the same offense. Having Barkley and Kenneth Gainwell, a fourth-year veteran here, helping him every day has helped Shipley learn the offense and the NFL way.

"It's been great having those guys because we're all learning the same thing and helping each other out," Shipley said. "Being able to take what I'm being taught and translate it into the test in the classroom or into what we're doing on the field, that's what is important here.

"The more you know, the faster you are going to play. I want to be a 4.3, 4.4 guy who plays like a 4.1, 4.2 guy. That's the edge I want. I feel the physical part, I can compete. I can play at this level. I know that. But the more I know and how I apply that, it's what can make the difference. Every little detail matters."

Assistant Head Coach/Running Backs Coach Jemal Singleton has nothing but good things to say about Shipley as the Eagles develop the young running back and find ways to incorporate him into the offense.

"Will did some really good things at Clemson. I got a chance to work him out in a private workout and just get to meet him and I thought his personality, just the reverence that everyone, I mean, everyone in that building at Clemson had for him. I have some close friends that are on staff there that couldn't speak anything but great things about him on a whole other level," Singleton said. "I just think his work ethic, his leadership ability, all those things are what help him now. It's the football stuff as he continues to grow and get better, but he's got some of those intangibles that I think are very important at this level."

What is the ceiling for Shipley? He has high goals.

"I'm a really competitive guy," he said. "I want to be one of the greatest to do it. That's just who I am and what I work for."
