Spadaro: Are you serious? These numbers are simply impressive

We know the Eagles are 3-0 since the bye week ended, and we know they are just, well, a different football team since that time, as demonstrated in wins over Cleveland, New York, and Cincinnati.

But how different?

Here are some numbers to think about as the Eagles prepare for Jacksonville, a 2-6 team that isn't nearly as bad as the record indicates – the Jags have lost three games in the final 18 seconds of games, two at the buzzer.

1. The offense has turned the corner. Here are some specifics

Since the bye week, the Eagles are …

  • First in the NFL in fewest giveaways, zero
  • First in the NFL in fourth-down conversions, 6 for 6
  • Tied for first in the NFL in rushing touchdowns, 6
  • First in the NFL in rushing first downs, 34
  • Second in the NFL in rushing offense, 182 yards per game
  • Second in the NFL in average yards per pass attempt, 9.4 yards
  • Second in yards per reception, 14.6 yards
  • Third in passer rating, 125.3
  • Fifth in completion percentage, 70 percent

"Just finding our rhythm," Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore said. "You're able to evaluate four weeks of the season (heading into the bye week). In the old days, that would be a quarter of your regular season. So it's great. You re-emphasize the things that you're doing well, identify the things that maybe we can evolve or correct.

"So, everyone goes through those processes. I feel like we have been heading in the right direction."

What a difference a bye week makes? It seems that way. The Eagles have had great ball security, which in turn has led to a balanced offense, sustained drives, good production on first and second downs, explosive plays in both the running and passing games, and outstanding play from quarterback Jalen Hurts.

A key number above is the passer rating, at 125.3. When a quarterback has it going, the offense has it rolling. That's a general rule of thumb in this game.

"Jalen has just done an excellent job with the football, certainly in the last few weeks," Moore said. "I think he's doing a really good job making great decisions while still being aggressive. He's playing at a really good level."

This is not a finished product, not by a long shot. The Eagles are still working through some injuries along the offensive line and at tight end. They have work to do to play at the highest level of offense – early scoring, red zone touchdowns, for example – and that's the exciting part. The limit is that, in the team's mind, there is no limit.

"We're as good as we want to be," wide receiver A.J. Brown said. "It's on us."

2. Defensively, it's been much of the same

The Eagles have been dominating on that side of the ball as well since the bye week. Let's take a look …

  • First in the NFL in points allowed/game, 9.7
  • First in the NFL in points per drive allowed, 0.97
  • First in total defense, 214.3 yards per game
  • First in yards per play allowed, 3.9 yards
  • First in passing defense, 136.3 yards per game
  • First in yards per pass play allowed, 4.6 yards
  • First in quarterback sacks, 14
  • First in first downs allowed/game, 14
  • Second in the NFL in rushing defense, 78 yards per game
  • Sixth in red zone defense, 40 percent touchdown percentage

Bottom line? The defense is picking up on what coordinator Vic Fangio is selling and he pointed to the final possessions against Cincinnati when the defense had two takeaways and a stop on fourth down as moments to measure the improvement.

"Makes a huge difference. I mean, those last three drives – not counting the last, last one – but the fourth-down stop is like a takeaway," Fangio said. "The interception and then the quick fumble. Three series got stopped right away.

"It has a huge effect on everything. Both defense's confidence to make a play like that and field position for the offense. I believe it was just a seven-point game on the fourth-down stop, and all of a sudden we have the ball already in field goal range. So, huge plays."

And a huge step forward for the Eagles, on a three-game winning streak with Jacksonville coming to town for a late-afternoon, Hall of Fame, Kelly Green game on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.
