The Eagles' offense struggled in Landover, Maryland, as the Commanders split the series with 27-10 win. A familiar story this season, the Eagles scored zero points in the second half after putting up 10 in the first. Saquon Barkley scored the Eagles' lone touchdown of the game on a direct snap. The Commanders advance to 2-4-1 while the Eagles plummet to the bottom of the NFC East after dropping their sixth straight game to fall to 2-6.
"I think we are making steps, but we need to clean it up at a very rapid pace. And I think our guys have the urgency. We have the fight. We just need to hone in on those little things," Tanner McKee said after the game. "We're a couple details, a couple plays away from winning that game, a couple third down conversions, that fourth down. They did nothing to stop us on that fourth down. We messed it up. We backed ourselves up. So, it's a lot closer than it seems than it feels. It's encouraging, but it's frustrating at the same time."
Despite Barkley notching 13 carries, the Eagles' running game lacked explosiveness. Elijah Mitchell averaged 3.1 yards per carry and Barkley averaged 2.3. The longest run of the night was a 15-yard scramble by McKee. The offensive line struggled, allowing the Commanders to record nine tackles for loss, eight quarterback hits, and five sacks.
"Just need to be better everywhere," Head Coach Nick Sirianni said after the game. "Until we coach better, until we have better with our detail as coaches, until our players play with better detail, then we're going to see the same results. And that falls on me. I feel like with all the detail that's not happening right now, I got to try a different approach."
Even with the Commanders' offense committing five false starts, the Eagles could not take advantage. Down 13-10 in the third quarter, McKee fumbled the ball away while in field goal range, proving to be the turning point of the game.
"I got to have a better time clock and we'll see. Possibly better pocket presence as well," McKee said of the play. "Just either tucking it earlier, or sliding, or whatever it is. I'll see it on film and I'll get it fixed."
Once up 10-0 in the first quarter, the Eagles watched on as the Commanders' offense put up 27 unanswered points.
Makai Lemon was active in the offensive game plan, recording six catches for 57 yards. Most catches were in short-yardage situations, setting up manageable third downs.
The Eagles' defense recorded their first fumble recovery of the season for the team's fourth takeaway this season. Andrew Mukuba hit Commanders tight end Chig Okonkwo at exactly the right angle, knocking the ball loose. Zack Baun, who was in coverage on Okonkwo's catch, recovered for the Eagles in Commanders' territory.
Stepping in for the injured Jihaad Campbell, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. led the game in tackling with 10 combined tackles, six of them coming on solo efforts. The defensive line was able to get to Jayden Daniels, with Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith both recording sacks.
