Spadaro: From top to bottom, Eagles have it all in quarterback room

This is exactly how the Eagles hoped it would develop. You build a quarterback room and you hope that it brings out the best in everyone – you've heard "iron sharpens iron" how many times? – and that the production at the game's most important position is high no matter who is on the field.

That's exactly what is happening with the Eagles in this 2024 summer of Training Camp and preseason football. With Jalen Hurts, Kenny Pickett, Tanner McKee, and Will Grier, the Eagles have four quarterbacks who are … out … there … balling.

Just the way every team wants it to be.

The latest example came on Thursday night at Gillette Stadium when Pickett, McKee, and Grier combined to complete 29 of 37 passes for 242 yards. Most of the completions were of the short- and mid-range variety, with only a 28-yard catch-and-run connection down the middle to wide receiver Joseph Ngata going for more than 20 yards, but all three quarterbacks had some success. There were five sacks, four of them with Pickett on the field working against New England's starting defense, but everyone understands the lineup differences there.

Combine Thursday night with the opening preseason game when Pickett went 14-of-22 and led a marvelous 15-play, 75-yard touchdown drive and then McKee put together two long drives, one that produced a touchdown, and you understand why the Eagles are feeling good about the quarterback picture as it stands.

And this is how it stands. Indisputably:

  • Hurts is the starter and he has been great in Training Camp. Just great. Not a single interception thrown during practices at the NovaCare Complex and the joint work at Gillette Stadium with New England. He is in command of the huddle and is on the same page with Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore, Head Coach Nick Sirianni, Quarterbacks Coach Doug Nussmeier, and Passing Game Coordinator/Associate Head Coach Kevin Patullo. The offense has been sharp throughout the summer and the passing game has been lit. Hurts has options to run the ball, he has a plethora of targets to throw to, and, of course, the running game should be potent headed by Saquon Barkley.
  • Pickett is the No. 2 and a very capable one at that. He played in 25 games with 24 starts after Pittsburgh made him the 20th overall draft pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and he's been impressive. In fact, coming out of the spring Organized Team Activities, media observers raved about Pickett and wondered, out loud, if he would challenge for playing time this season. He was that impressive. He has worked with the backups throughout Training Camp and has played well. Pickett makes all the throws, is mobile and agile, and is a tough guy and a team guy.
  • McKee continues to build on his strong rookie-season Training Camp. He is developing at a great pace. McKee looks so good in and out of the pocket, he's been cool under pressure, has been solid in late-game comeback wins in the preseason, and has been more mobile than maybe some people out there expected. The fact that the media and fans are raving about McKee and wondering how he should be slotted in this room is nothing but a compliment for him, for the way the Eagles are coaching him, and for the quarterback system in place within the organization.
  • Grier has hardly had any reps in practice and is strictly the fourth quarterback here, and that is why it was so impressive to see him to go out and move the ball well in his single series at New England. He drove the offense 56 yards in 11 plays and Jake Elliott put the cherry on top of the drive with a 38-yard field goal. Then it was time to turn the offense back over to McKee for the late-game heroics.

Four quarterbacks. Four different stories. All successful.

To be able to head into the final week of the preseason with everyone understanding the depth chart, knowing his role, and playing good football, that's a dream come true for the quarterback position and that's where the Eagles stand now. They have it rolling at quarterback and when that happens, good things happen for the football team.
