It is underway and all of it comes with the glorious energy that the first day brings: The players arrive at the NovaCare Complex and the buzz goes through the roof and you realize that … it … is … all … starting … now.
Training Camp, 2024.
Day 1 goes like this: The players report and do their physical check-ins, go through the assessments with the Player Performance team, take a conditioning test, and then dive right into it. The clock is ticking toward September 6 and the Green Bay Packers in Brazil, and so there is a team meeting to attend with Head Coach Nick Sirianni setting the tone for the summer and the season and then meetings for all three phases of the squad – offense, defense, special teams – and then the routine begins: Rest, recovery, study, sleep, come back the next day and be ready to hit the practice field embracing the intensity and tempo of Training Camp, and be great.
Welcome to the beginning of the 2024 Philadelphia Eagles season, one that holds so much promise and brings tremendous anticipation and, as always, expectations.
The storylines are what you know and have talked about for weeks and months: The new coordinators, Kellen Moore on offense and Vic Fangio on defense, are here to implement their systems and put the players in their best positions for success. For Moore, it is a matter of taking the core pieces of a returning, productive offense – an outstanding quarterback in Jalen Hurts, star wide receivers in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, a standout tight end in Dallas Goedert, a top-level offensive line with some changing parts – and work in concert with Sirianni to raise it to a new level and, part in parcel, integrating star running back Saquon Barkley into the mix.
Fangio has more of a puzzle to put together, at least from a personnel standpoint. Every single player is new to him, of course (just as is the case with Moore), and many are new to Philadelphia. The Eagles aggressively remade the roster at all three levels in the offseason, so building chemistry and cohesion here is on the same plane of importance as learning the X's and the O's and seamlessly constructing the vision Fangio has for that side of the football.
On special teams, there are always new faces and this year is no different in the core group and the return team, and there is also the matter of how to navigate the NFL’s new kickoff rules to the team's advantage. What might that look like? It's hard to say, and it very well could be that it changes throughout the season as teams find success with a certain formula. No doubt, it makes Special Teams Coordinator Michael Clay's work more involved in this Training Camp and throughout the preseason.
For all, it is a fresh start and a rising challenge. This is the first rung of a season-long ladder with the understanding that what is directly ahead – Training Camp practices, three preseason games, a joint practice with New England – will determine how the Eagles pare down to 53 players (plus practice squad) from the current 90-man roster.
All of this happens in five weeks, and then it's on to the regular season and Green Bay and Brazil and all of that fun stuff. First, the grind. It is here, and not a moment too soon. The quest is obvious, as it is for every one of the 32 NFL teams. The Eagles know the path and they know how important each and every one of the steps ahead is for every player and the team.
Here we are, then, to the first day of the 2024 Training Camp. The Eagles know what they can become and certainly they have the understanding of the hard work needed to reach their goals. The day we've been waiting for is finally here and the advice here? Enjoy the ride. It's going to be a fun one!
On Tuesday, July 23, Eagles players arrived at the NovaCare Complex to report for Training Camp with physicals, a conditioning test, and the first team meeting.
