Quarterback Michael Vick is at a loss for words when trying to fathom why he has had so many tipped passes at the line of scrimmage this season.
"I don't know, but this is the first year I've had probably 30 tipped balls in a season," Vick said. "It's never happened before and I don't know where it comes from. I haven't changed my game. I haven't done anything different. Everything is the same. I don't know what it is. We have to figure it out."
Head coach Andy Reid noted on Monday that Vick had four batted passes last Sunday against the Dolphins. Reid couldn't pinpoint one reason as he explained that some of them are on Vick and there are some that are on the offensive line.
Vick isn't the tallest quarterback, but again, he said it hasn't been an issue until this season. Even offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg pointed out that there are big quarterbacks who have a tendency to get passes tipped and shorter guys who rarely see that happen. If anything, Mornhinweg credited the defensive linemen around the league who have a much better feel for a quarterback's movements and can anticipate when to get their hands up.
The biggest change around Vick this season is his offensive line executing Howard Mudd's scheme. But even the offensive linemen will tell you, there's only so much they can do with the tipped passes.
"Batted passes are just one of those things that sometimes teams do a good job of getting their hand in the right spot at the right time," center Jason Kelce said. "There's not much you can do about it other than maybe give the defensive lineman a shot in the gut so he'll think twice about doing it."
Vick has thrown 12 interceptions this season with some of them as a result of the tipped passes. That interception total is just one below his career high of 13, which he had in 2005 and 2006. It will be interesting to see if this is an issue that continues to plague Vick, or if the Eagles can overcome it.
