The Eagles were in Tampa Bay to take on the Buccaneers in a rematch of last year's Wild Card round.
The Buccaneers took control early and despite a hard fought effort to comeback from the Eagles, Tampa Bay was just too much as it took down the Birds 33-16.
With A.J. Brown (hamstring), DeVonta Smith (concussion), and Lane Johnson (concussion) out with injuries, the Eagles looked to rely on their depth in this game, but it was not enough.
"Obviously didn't start good, I mean down 24-0 to start things off, obviously no excuse for that. We didn't coach well enough and we didn't play well enough," Head Coach Nick Sirianni said following the game.
First Quarter
- The Buccaneers received the ball first and went right down the field behind a start from Baker Mayfield in which he was 8-of-9 for 62 yards and a touchdown. Mike Evans caught a 2-yard pass in the left corner of the end zone to give the Bucs an early lead. (Buccaneers 7 – Eagles 0)
- The Eagles opened up the game offensively with a three-and-out, giving the ball right back to Tampa Bay after gaining only seven yards on 3rd-and-10. Dallas Goedert made the catch, picking up where he left off from his 10-catch, 170-yard performance against the Saints.
"Same thing as it's been, we've been shooting ourselves in the foot. We have to be able to come out and move the ball early and get points on the first drive. We haven't done that yet this year," Goedert said.
- The Buccaneers' offense continued their momentum, going quickly down the field again and finishing it off with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Trey Palmer. It took only 5 plays to go 80 yards to extend their lead. (Buccaneers 14 – Eagles 0)
- With 1:06 remaining in the quarter, the Bucs' punt bounced off the leg of Cooper DeJean as he was hit, after Isaiah Rodgers shoved the Bucs defensive back Josh Hayes into DeJean, making the ball live and Tampa Bay recovered to give them the ball at the Eagles' 22.
"Me being a gunner in my career, I know not to hit the punt returner, so with me guarding him, I thought to myself, 'I'm going to push him into the returner' and get the flag because that's part of the game. I kind of thought it was going to be a flag, which it was, but they eventually picked it up and said it was because I pushed him. I've never heard that before, but it is what it is," Rodgers said.
Second Quarter
- The Buccaneers' success continued to begin the second quarter as they took advantage of the good field position by punching in their third score of the half on a one-yard run from Mayfield on 4th-and-goal. (Buccaneers 21 – Eagles 0)
- The Eagles' defense kept the Buccaneers out of the end zone after Kameron Johnson bobbled and then dropped a wide open touchdown with 7:18 remaining in the half. Chase McLaughlin finished off the 11-play, 65-yard drive with a 21-yard field goal. (Buccaneers 24 – Eagles 0)
"It's just a matter of responding, really reacting to what's going on. You have different things in the flow of a game. When you go in and say, 'I'm gonna attack a team like this,' but ultimately, you got to go out there and play ball, have a feel for the game and what they're doing. And we just all have to be better with that, starting with me," Hurts said about responding in the moment to going down 24-0.
- The Eagles picked up their first first down of the game with 6:29 left in the second quarter off of a 7-yard scramble from Jalen Hurts.
- The Eagles started to put together a drive and show signs of life, converting on a 3rd-and-1 with the tush-push to put them at the Tampa Bay 33 with 4:53 remaining. Following the tush-push, Hurts found Goedert on back-to-back plays, one for nine yards and another for 18 to set them up at the Bucs' 6-yard line.
- TOUCHDOWN! On 4th-and-goal, Hurts ran out of the pocket, bought time, and found Parris Campbell in the back of the end zone to put the Eagles on the board. It was the first touchdown as an Eagle for Campbell, who was elevated from the practice squad for the game. (Buccaneers 24 – Eagles 7)
- Tristin McCollum came in for Reed Blankenship with 1:54 remaining in the half. Blankenship went to the locker room and is questionable to return with an illness. The Eagles' defense forced the Bucs off the field quickly to give the offense the ball back with 1:14 in the half, however they went 3-and-out, giving it right back to Tampa Bay with 1:01 left. After another stop, the Eagles got the ball back with eight seconds left and took a knee to take it to halftime. (Buccaneers 24 – Eagles 7)
Third Quarter
- As he has done time and time again this season, Saquon Barkley provided a spark to open the half for the Eagles with a 59-yard run to set them up at the Tampa Bay 11. Barkley flew down the right side of the field to open up the offense. Barkley is the only NFL player with multiple 50+ yard carries this season (65-yard TD in Week 4 at New Orleans). He is the first Eagle to register 59+ yard runs in consecutive games since Miles Sanders did so in Weeks 5-6 of 2020.
- TOUCHDOWN! The tush-push struck again as Hurts shoveled his way into the end zone on 1st-and-goal to bring the Eagles within 10. (Buccaneers 24 – Eagles 14)
- Slay went to the sideline with 11:20 remaining in the third quarter after being slow to get up following the previous play. Rodgers came in for him at cornerback. Slay later returned.
- The Buccaneers came right back with a score of their own on a 3rd-and-goal pitch to Bucky Irving for a 1-yard run for his first career NFL touchdown. Irving's touchdown on 2nd-and-goal was overturned as he was stopped short of the goal line. The Eagles blocked the extra point thanks to Rodgers and Kelee Ringo recovered the ball and ran it back 60 yards for two points.
- (Buccaneers 30 – Eagles 16)
- The Eagles' promising drive was put to an end as Lavonte David stripped Hurts as he went to throw on 1st-and-10 from the Tampa Bay 26. Ben Stille recovered the ball for the Buccaneers at their own 24.
"Ultimately, the goal is to protect the ball. I think there have been a ton of different situations where different things have come up, and then they've all kind of been different, in a sense, but you just have to learn from them all," Hurts said.
"You know, strip-sack fumbles like that, Jalen is getting ready to throw. When you look at those, there's guys coming from behind on you and get the ball out, that's not on Jalen. But Jalen gets credited for that. And so, again, I have to look at the tape and see what happens," Sirianni said.
- Mayfield found former New York Giant Sterling Shepard downfield for a 30-yard catch to set the Buccaneers up inside Philadelphia territory. Shepard, who was brought up from the practice squad, jumped up and grabbed the ball out of the air over the defenders to bring down the tough catch.
- Josh Sweat brought down Mayfield for a sack and nearly brought the ball with him, setting up a 3rd-and-11 at the 50. Jalen Carter went to the locker room as the third quarter came to an end. The Eagles got the third-down stop, but it wouldn't matter, as Avonte Maddox got called for holding, giving the Bucs a first down to end the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
- The Eagles' defense made another third down stop, this time on 3rd-and-12, but the Bucs managed to add three more points with a 52-yard field goal from McLaughlin with 13:04 to play. (Buccaneers 33 – Eagles 16)
- After Hurts was sacked on 3rd-and-29 following a 2nd-and-10 sack and a holding penalty on Tyler Steen, the Eagles punted the ball back to Tampa Bay with 9:17 remaining at their own 11-yard line.
- The sacks continued as they Eagles went for it on 4th-and-11 from their own 49 as Hurts was taken down by Anthony Nelson to give the Bucs the ball at the Eagles' 42-yard line with 4:15 left.
- The Buccaneers held onto the ball and ran out the clock, picking up their third win of the season. (Buccaneers 33 – Eagles 16)
"Bye week is good for anybody. We have to continue to focus on us going into the bye week and doing the things we need to do. Just focus and play as a team and understand that the season is long and we have to pin on all 53 of each other," C.J. Gardner-Johnson said.
