Game Recap: Falcons vs. Eagles

Eagles football is back at Lincoln Financial Field!

The Eagles played host to the Falcons for a Monday Night Football battle of the birds. The team came into the game 1-0 after taking down the Packers 34-29 in Brazil in Week 1.

After a back-and-forth battle, the Falcons came away victorious 22-21.

"They made a couple more plays than we did down the stretch. We made some plays, they made more. That's on all of us, it starts with coaching and goes to the players, we're all responsible for the loss," Head Coach Nick Sirianni said.

"It's a good learning lesson for us, that's how we go about it and I feel like that was a good learning lesson for us. As a good team, we have to make sure that we don't let opportunity slip because that's what happened," Brandon Graham said after the game. "We have a good team here, we're building, and got to get hot at the right time. I think if people keep believing and not buy into all the other stuff then I think we will be good."

First Quarter

  • Braden Mann pinned the Falcons at their own 8-yard line after the Eagles were stopped on their opening drive of the game. After a 5-yard completion to Britain Covey, Jalen Hurts was brought down after a 3-yard run on 3rd-and-9.
  • After a pair of 7-yard runs by Bijan Robinson, the Eagles' defense stopped the Falcons after Nakobe Dean helped force an incompletion intended for Robinson on 3rd-and-4.
  • Saquon Barkley made his presence felt in his first game at home as an Eagle, juking his way all over the field and making defenders miss. Barkley had four carries for 39 yards on the Eagles' second drive, which ended in a failed 4th-and-4 attempt from the Falcons' 9-yard line.
  • "We were getting into a good groove, coach was dialing it up. Offensive line was laying it on those guys," Barkley said.
  • The defensive battle continued late into the first, as Quinyon Mitchell nearly held onto what would've been his first-career interception on 3rd-and-4 with 2:06 remaining in the quarter. The first quarter came to a scoreless end as both teams tried to figure each other out.

Second Quarter

  • The Falcons began the quarter by getting into Eagles territory after a 15-yard run from Tyler Allgeier. They settled for a 39-yard field goal from Younghoe Koo after Josh Sweat brought down Kirk Cousins on a 3rd-and-9 run. (Falcons 3 – Eagles 0)
  • Jalen Hurts found DeVonta Smith for an 18-yard gain to get the Eagles to the Falcons' 48. Two plays later, a 23-yard run from Hurts set the Eagles up at the 23-yard line as he was assessed a delay of game penalty after the run for spiking the football.
  • TOUCHDOWN! Hurts found Smith in the back of the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown with 5:15 remaining in the half. (Eagles 7 – Falcons 3)
  • The Falcons' drive down the field lost momentum after a 15-yard penalty on Ray-Ray McCloud after he punched C.J. Gardner-Johnson in the helmet after the play. The penalty came after a 18-yard catch from McCloud, but pushed Atlanta back to the Eagles' 38-yard line.
  • Robinson got the Falcons into the red zone after a 14-yard rush up the middle. The Eagles' defense held strong near the goal line, forcing Cousins to throw the ball away on 3rd-and-goal from the 4-yard line. Koo knocked in a 22-yard chip shot with 6 seconds remaining in the half. (Eagles 7 – Falcons 6)

Third Quarter

  • The Falcons came out of the halftime break with an offensive game plan centered around Robinson again. Robinson had the first four touches for the Atlanta offense to begin the third quarter – two catches and two rushes for a total of 44 yards.
  • Atlanta's first drive of the second half ended in another field goal from Koo from 34 yards out. (Falcons 9 – Eagles 7)
  • Hurts found Smith for a pair of long games in the Eagles first drive of the new half – a 14-yard play to get them to the Falcons' 46 and later a 19-yard pass to bring them to the 13.
  • FIELD GOAL! Jake Elliott saw his first field goal attempt of the game with a 29-yard field goal to give the Eagles the lead back with 4:28 to play in the quarter. (Eagles 10 – Falcons 9)
  • The Falcons scored their first touchdown of the night after a 4th-and-4 conversion led to a 42-yard catch and run from Darnell Mooney with 1:29 remaining. Atlanta failed the 2-point conversion after an incomplete pass to Drake London. (Falcons 15 – Eagles 10)

Fourth Quarter

  • The fans of Lincoln Financial Field got to see the first tush push at home as the Eagles converted on a 4th-and-1 easily with a 3-yard gain from Hurts.
  • TOUCHDOWN! After Barkley was ruled down at the 1-yard line on the previous play, the tush push struck again in its purest form – for a touchdown. Barkley finished what he started on the 2-point conversion, leaping over the goal line. (Eagles 18 – Falcons 15)
  • In one of the biggest moments of the game, Gardner-Johnson came up huge, stopping a 4th-and-1 run from Robinson to give the Eagles the ball back at the Atlanta 39 with 5:38 to play in the game.
  • "It's do or die, him versus me. Unfortunately that wasn't the ultimate lead to win the game, but like I said, there's other things in this game that we're going to look at and fix as a team," Gardner-Johnson said.
  • The Eagles churned down the clock, working their way into the red zone before settling for a 28-yard field goal from Elliott to extend the lead with 1:39 remaining. Barkley dropped a ball that would have given the Eagles a first down and potentially end the game before they had to kick the field goal. (Eagles 21 – Falcons 15)
  • "I dropped the ball, let my team down today. Shouldn't have put the defense in that position, make that catch and the games over," Barkley said.
  • "I trust him everyday of the week to make a play, just like everybody else," Hurts said about Barkley. "We'll be better from it."
  • The Falcons moved quickly down the field – it took three plays for them to get into the red zone after Mooney made a pair of long catches down field.
  • Cousins found London for a 7-yard touchdown pass to tie the game with 34 seconds remaining. After a 15-yard penalty on London for unsportsmanlike conduct, Koo knocked in the extra point for the lead. (Falcons 22 – Eagles 21)
  • Hurts found Dallas Goedert for a 13-yard gain to begin the drive, moving the Eagles to their own 43 with 27 seconds left. One play later, the Falcons would seal the game with a game-ending interception from Jesse Bates on a deep ball intended for Smith.
  • "Jalen did a lot of things to help us be in that football game and have a chance to win that game, he played a really good game, obviously last play didn't go how we wanted," Sirianni said.
