Game Vs. Redskins: Redskins HC Mike Shanahan

On ending the season in a disappointing way: "I thought it was competitive, but they threw that post-route and we had our chances, but obviously we're disappointed to finish that fourth quarter like we did."

On the sequence at the end of the first half: "Yeah, when we called the play, our headset went out and called the play—a throw to the endzone—and just say, 'Hey if you don't get in the endzone, just throw the ball.' And we had three go-routes called, but the headsets went out. Rex called one on his own and we saw it in bounds and hustled to what we call Geronimo, very similar to what we did last week, to get the field goal team on there so we could kick a field goal. Of course, (OL) Will Montgomery thought we were just going to kill it, so of course you can't kill it because it's fourth down. So the whole mix up there was because of communication and trouble not getting the play. We had the chance to go into Geronimo, but with the confusion right there the clock wound down."

On mix ups on special teams: "Yeah, what are you going to do. Again, we had five blocked field goals for the year, one on the extra point. A new guy in there at the right guard position, but we still got to do better. A lot of teams have new people, but that really hurt us this year."

On if he's seen five blocked field goals in a season: "No, I've never seen it. I don't think I've ever seen three."

On LB Brian Orakpo's injury: "It was his peck. He hurt it at halftime."

On the severity of Orakpo's injury: "Serious enough where he couldn't play. Beyond that, I really don't know."

On if Orakpo was hurt on the sack: "I don't know how he hurt it."

On WR Santana Moss removing his helmet at the four yard line: "Well, I thought he had said something. I didn't know he was taking his helmet off. He was a little frustrated because we had a sprint out play and he did a good job getting downfield, and felt he was held. I thought he had said something to him, that's why he threw the flag, I didn't know he was taking his helmet it off. Right, it was, because I asked him about it third quarter. You can't do that."

On RB Evan Royster's game: "He played well, played well. Had another good game, but thought we had a good plan going into the game with the running game. Really for three quarters, we had a chance. But when you're 0-for-3 in the redzone, you can't win games. We had moved the ball as well as anybody's moved the ball against them for a long time—they'd given up 225 yards a game and we almost had that at halftime. So we were doing some good things, but we didn't show any points. And that's what you got to do, you got to get points. We had a chance to have that first touchdown, that dropped pass, the chance to get a couple field goals or at least a touchdown there at the end. We got no points instead of 14 of 17 and you can't go on the road and win games like that."

On Royster being banged up in the locker room: "Yeah, he got IVed at half, after the first series, and lucky enough he was ready to go in the second series. But he was banged up most of the game. His ribs were very sore, he was dehydrated, and he was tough enough to go back and forth and play most of the game during the second half, but he was hurting. The same thing with (RB Roy) Helu, he just never got back into the swing of things and he was hampered throughout the game."

On if he looks at the positives from this season with a 5-11 record: "Well you have to. When you're building a football team, you take a look at the positives, the guys that can help you next year. The guys that obviously went on IR that didn't come back, the young guys that got some valuable experience that really did some good things over five, six weeks. You take a look at the offense, moving the ball much better, but you can't make those mistakes, you got to make those catches. It was the first time this year I believe that we actually threw a touchdown pass where somebody ran it into the endzone. I think every other catch or every other throw had been in the endzone when we caught it, so it's nice to see someone make a big play out there. And that's what you have to do. We had a chance, we had a couple opportunities, but you got to make them."

On if Grossman has arm strength issues after underthrowing WR Anthony Armstrong: "No, it was a broken play. Houdini couldn't have thrown the football in that, but Rex threw the ball up in the air, gave (Armstrong) a chance to make a play. Rex played a heck of a game today. To have that type of pass rush and to make some of the throws like he did under duress, I'm really proud of the way he played. Had a chance to (WR) Santana (Moss) early, a touchdown pass, but obviously that didn't work out. You can only put the ball up there so many times, but I was proud with the way he hung in there, took a lot of shots."

On if he likes that Grossman can take hits: "You like when a guy can move the football and move the chains and everybody's got a piece of the puzzle, and it takes a lot of guys to get it done. The same thing on defense. One guy can look pretty bad, pretty poor, especially the quarterback, if not everybody is going in the same direction. But like I said, we moved the ball fairly well, but the big thing is you got to score points, you got to win football games and we didn't do that."

On the Eagles' coming back after they cut the lead to three points: "I think the big play that they had, it was 13-10, we got them 2nd & 8, 2nd & 10, and they threw a post-route. And (WR DeSean) Jackson made a great play, it looked like it was going to be intercepted and I thought our guys were in great position, and all the sudden he cut across the free safety, and all the sudden it's the difference in the game. Now it's a ten point game instead of going back and forth. So big play by them at the right time. And we couldn't capitalize on that afterwards."

On if he meets with personnel individually tomorrow: "Sometimes I do, meet with a handful of people. Normally I don't meet with players at the end of the year. I used to when I first got started, I've learned through time though that that's not the right time to talk to people, when they're very emotional. I'll let some time go, kind of gather your thoughts, look at a lot of film and talk to them a little bit later."

On if he convinced that things are moving in the right direction: "Well like I said, after the first four games, I thought we were moving the ball fairly well on offense. And then we hit a lull in there. I think the last five, six games, we've done some big things—run the football against some good teams—not as good as we need though. We've talked about adding a few pieces on offense, we need a few people on defense, we need a good draft. But we made some strides. Our football team is a lot different than a year ago, and that's a positive."

On paying attention to the scoreboard to see where they fall in the draft: "Well obviously, we'll find out very quickly where everybody will be. But now you got to go out and prepare for the draft just like you always have."

On converting less than 50% of redzone opportunities this season: "Well, I think you make a good point. Anything you do forward, you try to work on in the offseason and that's one of the areas we'll work on. Obviously the big one is turnovers. We've lost the turnover battle, just like Philadelphia. You don't make the playoffs if you turn the football over, regardless of how good you are. And we turn the football over quite a bit. A lot of areas we need to work on, I thought we made some strides, and we'll continue to keep on working."

On if Grossman improved over the course of the season: "I think, yeah, I think Rex feels a lot more comfortable with the system. The more reps you get, the better off you feel. You can see in the last four our five games, I think he's felt a lot more comfortable. I think that has to do with actually practicing without the OTAs, for everybody, I think everyone feels a lot more comfortable towards the end of the season. You know, you can see Philly's defense, totally different over the last three, four games in comparison to the first part of the season, but everybody's more comfortable with the system."

On if he can fix everything he wants to before next year: "We're gonna try."
