Philadelphia Eagles News

Head Coach Andy Reid

Injury Report: "As far as injuries go, (S) Colt Anderson will not practice today. (T) King Dunlap will not practice today; making improvement but will not practice. And (WR) Jeremy (Maclin) with a hip contusion will not practice. Everyone (else) will get out here and practice."

Opening Remarks: "I just wanted to say a word about Steve Sabol. He was a good friend and we're all going to miss him. What a great complement to the National Football League he was and a tribute to the National Football League that he was. Nobody did it better than him. I know his father is going to miss him dearly, along with the family. My heart goes out to him. He battled a tough battle with that brain cancer and he did it with a lot of pride and dignity. Again, the Philadelphia Eagles, myself, we're thinking of him.

"We're looking forward to the challenge of playing Arizona. We know it's a tough place to go into and play; very tough place. Their last six home games, they've won, starting back from last year. So, we know that they're a heck of a football team. They're coming off a big win against New England where they went into New England and won the game. They play tough, hard-nosed football; both sides of the ball, and their special teams is second to none. They've got a good returner and they block kicks and punts. They know how to do that thing. We're going to prepare ourselves, get ourselves right to go out there. We'll leave on Friday afternoon. We'll practice here on Friday. Today and tomorrow will be the same as we always do and then Friday will be a little bit earlier practice; the same length, but a little bit earlier, and then we'll head out to the West coast."

On whether T King Dunlap is closer to playing now than he was Sunday: "I'd say he's still sore. He's still sore, so we'll see. I think it will be a stretch for him to make it. But he has made a little improvement in that time."

On how WR Jeremy Maclin is feeling now compared to this time last week: "Jeremy actually had a good day yesterday and he got treatment today, so we'll just see. I mean, he's tender but he is improving."

On whether Arizona QB Kevin Kolb is playing at a level that he always anticipated he could: "I tell you, Kevin managed that game very well on Sunday. I thought he did a great job with that and he mixed it up. They do a lot of different things offensively. I'd tell you yes. He's a good football player and he did well in that game."

On whether Kolb will have a chip on his shoulder playing his former team on Sunday: "I'm not sure he'll have a chip. It worked out well for him to where he's a starter. That's a good thing for him. Now, will I tell you that he'll be very competitive and want to win the game, all those things? Sure. Yeah, absolutely. It wasn't like he left here in a bad spirit. That's not what it was."

On whether it is a stretch to think Maclin could practice this week and play on Sunday: "We'll see. I'm going to just see how it goes. I'm going to take it day by day. He made improvement. That's what I can tell you. Does he still have some soreness in there? Yeah. Will he practice today? No. But we'll see how he is tomorrow; literally take it day by day."

On TE Brent Celek and how much more dangerous he makes the offense: "I'll tell you, if everybody that is a viable receiver or ball carrier has the opportunity to carry the ball, that puts pressure onto the defense, that they know that they've got to account for that player. (FB Stanley) Havili did the same thing. Celek played at a high level and did a nice job on Sunday. He's a big part of that."

On the Arizona defensive line and why they are so effective at getting to the quarterback: "They have seven sacks in two games. They're right up at the top in sacks in the league. They have a great pressure package is what they have. They'll bring one or two extra guys. They do a lot of fire zone things, very similar to what (Pittsburgh defensive coordinator) Dick LeBeau did. I'm sure (Cardinals defensive coordinator) Ray (Horton) is probably getting tired of hearing that; it's really what Ray does, but he came from that system and they're doing it well. They have a lot of confidence and they have a lot of good athletes."

On how close C/G Steve Vallos was to originally making the team: "He was. Steve was very close to making it. That was one of the tougher cuts. He had a good preseason for us."

On whether Vallos can push C Dallas Reynolds for the starting center position: "I wasn't even there. I haven't thought about that. I just want both playing well. That's what I want."

On whether he has to do anything different on the offensive line to improve the protection in a loud stadium at Arizona: "Listen, there's a 99 percent chance they close (the roof) up. They did that all but for one game and it was like 70 degrees that game. I would imagine that they'd do it. It gives them two-fold: it keeps the heat out and it keeps the crowd loud. We understand that and we'll be ready for that. We'll practice that and be ready for it. As far as keeping it simpler, we're going to just do what we do. That's what you do. We've practiced it; you go do what you do."

On whether he expected a seamless transition between C Jason Kelce and Reynolds on Sunday: "One of the things (offensive line coach) Howard (Mudd) has done is he's given them opportunities to get in there during practice and literally practice with the ones; both (Reynolds) and (T Demetress) Bell and (T Dennis) Kelly have all done that. Once they got into the game, seamless is the word you used. I mean, it worked. I wouldn't expect any different. He's got a good player that he's playing against and we'll see how he does. I know he'll be ready to go."

On T Demetress Bell's technique on Sunday and whether he was working within offensive line coach Howard Mudd's scheme: "He did what he's been taught to do and I thought he did a good job with it."

On where Bell is on the learning curve at this point: "Listen, I've felt like the last two, three weeks here, he's really got a pretty good grasp of things. It looks like he feels more comfortable and that's an important part of it. This gives him an opportunity to get in and possibly play. We'll see how it all works with (T) King (Dunlap). If he gets in, I have full trust that he's going to do a great job. He's going to take the practice snaps today and probably tomorrow and a pretty good chance on Friday. So, we'll see how it all works."

On why Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald has been so successful against the Eagles: "He's just a great player. There's no better way of putting it. He's one of the top players in the National Football League. I think he'll go down, when he's all said and done, as one of the top receivers to ever play the game. He loves to play, great attitude, strong, and physical. He has great hands."

On whether there was any concern on bringing in a guy named Dallas to Philadelphia: "No, not really. I never thought about that, but it's a good question."

On whether King Dunlap is still the team's starting left tackle if he is healthy: "I'm just going to see. If King can play, he can play. If not, (T Demetress) Bell will play."

On whether Maclin's injury on Sunday was related to his injury the prior week: "It was in the same spot."

On whether there is a risk of further injury at this point for Maclin: "I don't think so. It's not one of those types of injuries. It's not a joint injury."

On what the coaching staff does to build up a player's confidence if they seem to hit rock bottom: "Literally, sometimes you need to take a step back and kind of regroup. They are all different and every situation is different. There's a time and a place where you have to do that. Obviously, (the next step is) work, work, and work. If we didn't have confidence in you, then you wouldn't be here. Take a step back to make whatever is wrong right, and move along."

On what Reid does with them while they are down: "You teach, that's what you do. You try to get their confidence back up to where it needs to be so they can play. If they need to learn the system, you get a little more learning in. That's how you go about it."

On CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie's approach to this game: "I think both of those guys are going to enjoy playing against their ex-teammates. That's what I think. As far as having a chip on your shoulder, I don't know how much it is having a chip on your shoulder as it is a competition thing. Just going out there – these are competitive guys anyways, and it just adds a little more spice to it."

On whether how well he knows Arizona QB Kevin Kolb will factor into the game plan at all: "We know what he does. You want to think that you know his strengths and his weaknesses, but I tell you that he's played against this defense a little bit, too. He knows the strengths and weaknesses of the defense. I'm sure it'll all equal out in the end."

On what kind of relationship he and Kolb have maintained: "I like Kevin Kolb, and I think he is a good person. With the exception of this Sunday, I wish him the best. He's a good person and he's a good football player."

On how Reid is able to fix the turnover problem without drilling it into their heads too much: "Practice. You go back and you practice. You go through and make sure the ball is high and tight. Make sure that as the running back or whatever primary ball carrier has the ball in his hands, whether it is a receiver or running back. As a quarterback, you make sure that you are reading the coverages and making the right decisions."

On whether T Demetress Bell has shown the ability that he thought he would when he signed here: "He did on Sunday. It would be another challenge for him and we'll see how all that goes. We'll see how much he gets in this week."
