This is the moment Jalen Hurts has been preparing for, the moment when it all comes to fruition – all the work he's put in on and off the field, all the preparation he has made for the start of the 2024 regular season.
That the Eagles are starting their journey in Brazil is one aspect that adds to the excitement of the moment – Hurts speaks expectantly of the week to come and the NFL history being made in South America.
And then he reminds us all of what is really the case: Live in the moment and rely on all the work you've done in the past to excel in the present and that present means Friday night in Brazil against the Green Bay Packers.
"I think it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, something to be very excited about – the international stage, Brazil. From what I've heard, it's a very beautiful place, amazing place, and a very passionate place as well when it comes to sports and their fans, so I'm excited to get a taste of that.
"It comes down to preparation – how we prepare and how we have prepared and having the opportunity to display that and compete against a really good team."
What are the Eagles on offense? What to expect starting Friday night with an offense that added running back Saquon Barkley and wide receiver Jahan Dotson, along with Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore, to an already-good attack? How different will things be with Moore responsible for the design and playcalling?
Friday night is the first tell. And from there, the Eagles will build.
One thing is for sure, though: Hurts has impressed everyone with the way he's absorbed the offense, commanded the huddle, and executed on the football field. That's all we know going into the opener. There is a lot to look forward to and to learn from as the Eagles prepare for Green Bay.
"There are a ton of different things we need to improve on and I think as a football team we've taken steps in the right direction and now we have the opportunity to assess where we are," Hurts said, "and that's the exciting part about it."
He could also add, "who we are," because the Eagles have given few hints to what Moore has in mind tweaking what the Eagles have done so well in the previous three seasons. For his part, Moore said he wants a clean operation, he wants his offense to get in and out of the huddle quickly and he wants the Eagles to play fast and with confidence and, above all else, to be on the same page.
That's going to mean a lot of adjusting on the fly, as is the usual in the first week of the regular season. Green Bay has a new defensive coordinator, Jeff Hafley, who spent the last four seasons at Boston College as the head coach there. Hafley was a position coach for seven seasons with San Francisco, Cleveland, and Tampa Bay, but there isn't a whole lot out there in terms of what to expect style-wise, and the Packers played their starters for fewer than 10 snaps in the entire preseason.
Great communication is going to be essential with Moore and Hurts, with Hurts and new center Cam Jurgens, and so on.
"You draw awareness with the different dots that you can connect whether it be players or coaches," Moore said. "You understand early in the season, everyone deals with unknown in the NFL. It could be a returning group that has been together for 10 years, they're going to evolve in some capacity during the offseason, so you definitely have to emphasize that there is going to be an element of 'new.' You lean heavily on what you've invested a lot of time in, things that people feel confident with. Understand what the tools are and what adjustments need to made in the course of the game.
"We understand that 'adjustment football' will be a part of this."
And that puts a ton of responsibility on Hurts, the quarterback. And guess what? This is what he lives for. This is his moment.
"I'm excited like everyone else," Hurts said. "We have all worked hard and we're going to be ready and I think you take it day by day and we feel good about that and about where we are."
