Keep it rolling! On a perfect fall day at Lincoln Financial Field, the Eagles dominated the Jacksonville Jaguars for much of the game, hit a bit of a hiccup in the third quarter, and then recovered in the fourth quarter to down the Jags, 28-23, winning their fourth straight game and raising their record to 6-2. The mood was every bit festive as the Eagles wore their Kelly Green jerseys for the first time this season and running back LeSean McCoy was inducted into the franchise's Hall of Fame at halftime.
A lot went right for the Eagles in this one, so let's take a look at the victory …
1. Early impact sets the tone
Sydney Brown was antsy sitting at his NovaCare Complex locker on Thursday. He understands how things are lined up in a very deep Eagles secondary and he knows that he is still gaining his timing and knocking off some rust after missing all of the spring and summer and the first month of the regular season coming back from a torn ACL suffered last season. But he wants to play. He wants to make his mark.
"I'm just naturally aggressive," he said.
On Sunday, he made it happen, flying down in coverage on a Braden Mann punt after the Eagles' first offensive possession stalled near midfield and punching the ball free from punt returner Austin Trammell. Kelee Ringo dived on the loose ball and recovered at the Jacksonville 20-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Jalen Hurts connected with running back Saquon Barkley in the right corner of the end zone as Barkley made a sensational over-the-shoulder catch, was able to get his feet down inbounds, and secured the pass for a touchdown.
It was the team's first first-quarter touchdown of the season and it helped get things rolling.
"That's my goal, to impact the game any way I can," Brown said. "It felt great. I had a great release and it timed up perfectly and I made the hit. Felt great. Glad to do something that helped us win this game."
2. Defense takes another big step forward
Digest these numbers: Jacksonville gained 31 total net yards on 6 possessions in the first half and finished with just 215 total net yards. A late first-half interception – a diving catch from linebacker Zack Baun – led to a touchdown to put the Eagles ahead 16-0 after two quarters.
Vic Fangio's defense did a good job on first and second down and then pressuring quarterback Trevor Lawrence, squeezing him in the pocket and limiting his throwing lanes. Nakobe Dean's interception in the last minute-plus of the fourth quarter sealed the deal – a leaping pick in the left corner of the end zone while in coverage against running back D'Ernest Johnson – was the first of his NFL career and part of a huge day for Dean (more on that later).
"It's a play that I knew they had. They have good backs that can run good routes, I know Saquon scored on it earlier in the game," Dean said. "I was kind of waiting on it. It was the opportune time. It was high red zone. They knew what we were in, they knew 3x1 when we were at the end of the game, so they got the read right and I just had to make a play," Dean said.
The defense did its job and continues to improve. Coming up with a big takeaway late in the game is a plus and something from which the Eagles will benefit later in the season.
3. More excellent play from quarterback Jalen Hurts
The numbers, first – 18 of 24 for 230 yards and a pair of touchdowns with a passer rating of 132.2 – and they were excellent. Again, no giveaways. Total control. Hurts had some pressure and took some sacks – three of them – and there is no doubt that the coaches and players will review the film. But there is progress every week with the offense and with Hurts and, oh yeah – he did not have a giveaway for a fourth straight week.
Hurts also did some damage with his legs – 13 carries, 67 yards, and a touchdown – and all of those yards and total offense numbers and touchdowns are adding up in a big, big way.
"I think, situationally, we could have been better. I think we could have executed better in some situations, handled some situations a little better, but I just can't get off of Nakobe and the play he made at the end of the game. So a hell of a play. A big-time moment. In my perspective, you're kind of gearing and trying to be prepared. You play the next play, and you want to be ready for the guys out there. And it was a tough one. We had to dig deep, different challenges that we had to face. I'm just proud that we found a way in the end. I can't say it was a complete complementary game full of complementary football, but we found a way to win," Hursts said.
It's a special Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field as the Eagles look to get to 6-2 on the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars while celebrating LeSean McCoy's induction into the Eagles Hall of Fame. The Eagles also turned the clocks back to the 1990s with the classic Kelly Green uniforms. Check out our exclusive gameday action photos here.
4. Saquon Barkley is just a great football player searching for perfection
Barkley wasn't thinking about his touchdown catch or his 159 rushing yards and a touchdown on 27 carries or all of the tough yards he gained after the game. He's his harshest critic and he was not pleased that he fumbled and Jacksonville recovered and returned it for a touchdown (Travon Walker, 35 yards) and that the score brought the Jags to within 22-16 and the Eagles had to win a tight one at the end.
"I knew it was going to be a fumble. It happened to me last year and that's why it stings even more. You don't let it sting in the moment, but it stings even more because you have to learn from your mistakes," Barkley said. "I have to do a better job of getting up and bring them down. I tried, but I didn't wrap up so have to go back to the fundamentals there and do a better job of taking care of the ball."
But there is also a lot of good to work with here – he's now over 1,000 scrimmage yards (he has 925 rushing yards) and has eight touchdowns scored in eight games (six rushing, two receiving) – joining LeSean McCoy (2011) as the only players in franchise history to reach those numbers so early in the season.
Of course, there's the backwards leap that everyone will be talking about in the days to come.
"It was the best play I've ever seen," Head Coach Nick Sirianni said. "And I had no choice but to give him – I've been giving out game balls this year for special plays. Obviously, Nakobe gets one. Ends the game with I guess would you call it a walk-off interception? It guess you would call it that. Even though you've got to take three knees. They should allow you to go to the next play.
"But Saquon's play, what I think is so cool, is there are going to be kids all over the country and all over Philadelphia – I really think about that – trying to make that play and talking about that play and simulating that play as they play backyard football or Pee Wee Football. They aren't going to be able to make it because I think he's the only one in the world that can do that."
5. The Eagles have playmakers at linebacker
We've seen the Eagles have their ups and downs at linebacker through the years, but there is no doubt they are getting terrific play from that position group this season. Baun had another tremendous game – 10 total tackles, the interception, two passes defensed, one tackle for loss – and has been a force all season. Dean came up with an incredible interception in the end zone to save the victory and his level of comfort, confidence, and production has increased week over week.
"I always feel like I'm going to have a big game," Baun said. "It's a mentality thing. You have to anticipate it. You have to envision it. You have to always want it."
These two are a great linebacking tandem and a strength in this defense. There is just no getting around it.
"It's so much fun when the work that you do in the dark shows up in the light," Sirianni said. "I really see that from those two guys, of all the work they put in."
6. DeVonta Smith continues to amaze
The Eagles lost wide receiver A.J. Brown with a knee injury early in the third quarter and the offense needed a play, so … who … would … make it? Uh, hello, DeVonta Smith, who followed up his great touchdown catch in Cincinnati (45 yards) with an amazing catch – one arm, his right, catching an over-the-shoulder throw from Hurts – and somehow, unbelievably, getting his feet inbounds to give the Eagles a 28-16 advantage in the fourth quarter. Unreal.
"If he (A.J. Brown) goes down, I feel like I have to step up. For me, I'm always ready for the challenge," Smith said. "They started to change their coverage and play more one-on-one, just let me do what I do."
The Eagles needed all of those points and will no doubt look to correct some areas where they know they need to improve. So, there is room to grow here. But a win is a win is a win and here we are 6-2 and ready for Dallas!
