Live Updates: Eagles vs. Saints

The Eagles were back in action today on the road against the New Orleans Saints.

After falling to the Falcons on Monday Night Football, the team was looking to get back on track against the undefeated Saints, who were coming off of a 44-19 victory over the Cowboys last week.

The Eagles pulled out a tough 15-12 victory over the Saints behind a big day from tight end Dallas Goedert, who had 10 catches for 170 yards. The defense played its best outing of the young season, putting pressure on Derek Carr and coming up with the game-sealing interception from Reed Blankenship.

Goedert's 170 yards were the most receiving yards by an Eagles tight end since Pete Retzlaff in 1965 vs. Washington (204 receiving yards), and the most by an Eagles pass catcher since A.J. Brown last season vs. Washington (175 receiving yards).

"We just kept trusting the process and kept working. We understand that when things like that (the loss to the Falcons) happen, everyone thinks the world is ending, but it really doesn't matter what the outside world thinks. It matters what happens in that locker room. And you see it today, we just kept trusting each other and kept having each other's back. And that's what team football is about. And coach always says, you can't be great without the greatness of others," Saquon Barkley said.

"That's a hard place to play and a hard place to win," Nick Sirianni said. "To come in here and get a win like that is special and we'll remember this – that brings a team closer together."

Lane Johnson was ruled out for the rest of the game with a concussion. Britain Covey was ruled out with a shoulder injury. Mekhi Becton (finger) was ruled out for the game after leaving in the first half. DeVonta Smith was ruled out with a concussion after going down early in the fourth quarter.

First Quarter

  • The Saints received the ball first and worked a drive that lasted 8:09 of game time before they settled for a 34-yard field goal. Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave were the focal points of the drive – Kamara had eight carries for 18 yards and Olave grabbed three catches for 36 yards. (Saints 3 – Eagles 0)
  • The Eagles' first drive did not go as planned – the team went three-and-out with Jalen Hurts being sacked by Alontae Taylor for a loss of 8 yards on 3rd-and-11.
  • The Eagles' offense got a spark after Hurts found Dallas Goedert downfield for a 43-yard gain to set them up at the Saints 13-yard line.
"It felt good to get in touches this week. But you know, I'm gonna do whatever I can to help the team win. I love blocking too, and so whatever I can do to help the team win, I will, and anytime my number gets called, I'm gonna try to make the biggest plays I can," Goedert said.

Second Quarter

  • The big-play momentum didn't last long as Hurts was picked off in the end zone by safety Tyrann Mathieu and returned for 23 yards.
  • Hurts had his second turnover of the game as he scrambled out of the pocket and was stripped by Carl Granderson for a fumble recovered by the Saints' Willie Gay.
"I have to do a better job protecting the ball," Hurts said. "I trust my guys to make plays, but I have to be better with that. The fumble is unacceptable, regardless of the circumstances, and so I own all of those things, and I'll learn from it and continue to be the best I can for my team."
  • Quinyon Mitchell saved a potential touchdown after forcing an incompletion on a deep throw to the end zone by Carr intended for Rashid Shaheed.
  • Lane Johnson came out of the game as he had to go to the locker room. Fred Johnson replaced Johnson at right tackle. Tyler Steen replaced Mekhi Becton at right guard as well.
  • The Eagles were still searching for points as they ran the two-minute drill. Hurts ripped off a 21-yard run to get them to the Saints' 48.
  • Hurts found Goedert again for a big gain of 22 yards to set the Eagles up at the New Orleans 24-yard line with 58 seconds remaining.
  • However, they would remain scoreless after being stopped on 4th-and-1 after a fake tush-push attempt saw Saquon Barkley get stopped for no gain. The Saints would take a knee and send it to halftime. (Saints 3 – Eagles 0)

Third Quarter

  • The Eagles got the ball to begin the second half, making it over the 50-yard line before being stopped on another 4th down attempt as Hurts was sacked by Bryan Breese on 4th-and-3 to give the Saints the ball at their own 40.
  • Mitchell nearly had a pick-six interception after forcing the incompletion on a pass intended for Shaheed on 1st-and-10.
  • The Eagles' defense remained strong, forcing another punt after Jalen Carter brought down Kamara for a loss of a yard to create a 4th-and-4.
  • Barkley got more involved in the third quarter, coming up with a 20-yard rush on his 14th carry of the game to move the Eagles near midfield at their own 48.
  • The drive was stopped short as the Saints forced a punt, which they blocked, setting themselves up at the Eagles' 27-yard line with 1:35 remaining in the quarter. The Eagles' defense came up with a huge 3rd-and-1 stop as Kamara took the snap himself and was brought down short by C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Nakobe Dean to close out the quarter.

Fourth Quarter

  • The defense of the Eagles struck again – this time it was a very, very close 4th-and-1 stop as Zack Baun stopped Kamara short of the first down to give the ball back to the offense at the start of the quarter.
  • Philadelphia's defense held New Orleans to 219 yards of total offense (130 passing, 89 rushing).
  • DeVonta Smith went to the medical tent after being hit hard after a catch where his helmet popped off from the hit.
  • TOUCHDOWN! Barkley exploded for a 65-yard touchdown rush to give the Eagles their first points of the day. The shifty running back got upfield and never looked back as he helped give the Birds the lead with 13:27 remaining. (Eagles 7 – Saints 3)
"I knew I had a lot of space to the right and the O-line blocked perfectly and I got into open field," Barkley said. "I was just thinking, knees, knees, knees, and just tried to run as fast as I can and get into the end zone."
  • The Saints came right back out firing – Carr found Kamara for a 27-yard reception to begin their first drive since the Eagles took the lead. However, the Eagles' defense held them to a 38-yard field goal after Darius Slay forced an incompletion in the end zone, followed by Baun making the third-down tackle on Mason Tipton. (Eagles 7 – Saints 6)
  • Goedert came up big again, making a 30-yard catch on 3rd-and-5 to put the Eagles at the Saints' 41. Jake Elliott missed a 60-yard field goal to the right, giving the ball back to the Saints at the 50.
  • The Saints got into Eagles territory thanks to a 29-yard catch from Olave on 2nd-and-10. A few plays later, Olave was wide open in the back, left corner of the end zone for a touchdown to give the Saints the lead back. The Eagles stopped the two-point conversion attempt to keep it a five-point game. (Saints 12 – Eagles 7)
  • The Eagles' offense stepped back on the field with 1:58 and three timeouts remaining. Goedert continued his outstanding day in a make-or-break moment – a 61-yard catch and run on 3rd-and-16 to set the Eagles up at the Saints 4-yard line with 1:05 remaining.
"When I caught the ball, I looked and said, 'Where is everybody?' and then just ran as fast as I could for as long as I could," Goedert said after the game.
  • TOUCHDOWN! Barkley finished off the big drive with a 4-yard rushing touchdown to put the Eagles back on top and give him his second score of the day. He kept it going by converting on the two-point conversion with a run up the middle to make it a three-point lead. (Eagles 15 – Saints 12)
  • INTERCEPTION! Reed Blankenship seals the deal for the Eagles, picking off Derek Carr on a deep pass to give them the ball back at their own 41. Brandon Graham brought the pressure on Carr to help force the turnover.
  • Hurts took a knee and the Eagles picked up their second win of the season in what was a tough battle on the road. (Eagles 15 – Saints 12)
"We heard everything and they (the players) heard it and they responded," Sirianni said. "All you can do is control yourself. You're always gonna have people saying different things about you and they went out there and they worked their butts off."
