S Major Wright, Florida | |||||
Pos. Rank: 9 | Grade: 3rd-4th Round | Height: 5-11 1/2 | Weight: 206 | 40: 4.44 | Year: 3-Jr. |
The Good: Talented safety prospect who's displayed flashes of being a complete player the past three years. Shows good recognition in coverage, has a sense of timing, and quickly closes to the ball with a burst of speed. Takes good angles to the play, displays top sideline-to-sideline range and speed getting to the flanks. Quick up the field to defend running plays or screens. Hard hitter who aggressively lays his shoulders into ball-carriers and wraps up tackling. Works well with cornerbacks and displays a nice feel for coverage. Stays with assignments.
The Bad: Possesses just an average break to the throw out of his plant. Showed a lot hesitation in his game last season. Not a big, tough run-defending safety.
The Verdict: Wright is a talented football player who ran hot and cold as a junior. At the top of his game, he's a terrific centerfielder who can go sideline to sideline defending the pass or stopping the run. He offers a great amount of upside and could be a bargain starting in Round Three if he's able to get his game back to the level where it was in 2008.
