Snow Bowl, Part 2: Saquon Barkley has historic Divisional Round performance

In the biggest snow game since 2013 against the Lions, Saquon Barkley made history.

Barkley, who had an Eagles single-game-record 255 yards in Week 12 against the Rams in Los Angeles, set the Eagles' single-game playoff rushing record with 205 yards as the snow swirled around Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday in the Eagles' 28-22 win to advance to the NFC Championship Game.

The playoff record was formerly held by Eagles legend Steve Van Buren (196 in the 1949 NFL Championship, also against the Rams), but Barkley knows what the most important thing was on Sunday.

"It was the same message as last week – the most important thing is winning football games, especially around this time of year," Barkley said at his locker after the game.

"Whatever it takes. Defense, our defense is special. Making plays for us. Of course, we're going to go back and watch and see what we can do better on offense. Our offensive line did a great job for us, we made the plays and got a win."

Barkley averaged 7.9 yards per carry and maintained a similar scoring route to which he had in the first meeting against the Rams.

His first touchdown of the game went for 68 yards with 1:07 remaining in the first quarter to give the Eagles a 13-7 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the NFL's leading rusher did what he's done all season with an exclamation point on a 78-yard touchdown to put the Eagles up by two scores with 4:36 left in the game.

"I just want to make good plays for the team," Barkley said. "Before that, I just kept telling myself just locking in, being focused, and the O-line did a really good job."

The Philadelphia offense dominated in the trenches once again, putting up 285 total rushing yards as they plowed through the snowy conditions.

By the second half, the field was completely covered as the snow took over, making it hard for both teams to operate.

"Our O-line wanted 300 and we only got 285, so we got to do a better job next week for those guys," Barkley said. "It starts up front. It starts up with those guys and then when you have a quarterback who can take it 50 yards to the house, that opens up stuff for you, too."

Quarterback Jalen Hurts opened the scoring with a 44-yard rushing touchdown and finished with 70 total on 10 carries.

Along with Barkley, he is also what makes this offense so hard to defend.

"I think what we've been able to do this year in terms of what our rhythm is, we love to start out fast, some type of way, get some explosives and pop some in the second half. Pop some big-time explosive plays in the second half," Hurts said.

"I think Saquon has been tremendous at that rain, sleet, or snow. So, he's been able to pound, pound, pound, and then take it off. That was fun. That was cute, I said, just being able to pop it off first. Saquon needed a break. So, I told him, I'll do it first."

As he has done all year, the superstar running back spread the praise around, knowing what it takes to advance in these high-intensity playoff games.

"I love the support from the sidelines, from the fans, the offense, we were all standing up supporting our defense," Barkley said, noting how the defense sealed the deal at the end of the game after Matthew Stafford's final pass went out of bounds.

"That's what it takes. It takes every single one of us if we want to accomplish what we want to accomplish. It's going to be a team effort, and we did that today."

Now, Barkley will play in his first ever conference championship game in his first year with the Eagles. It will be the second time in the last three years Philadelphia has made it this far.

"This is what you dream about. This is why I came to Philadelphia, I wanted to be a part of games like this and I'm just happy to be a part of it," he said. "You don't look at it like that, you look at it like you have one more game. The beautiful thing is you have to go through Philadelphia. I remember after we lost to Washington, some of those guys were looking at us, saying that we're going to see you again, and here we are." – Written by Liam Wichser
