Spadaro: What inspired the turnaround on defense? That and more in the day-after notebook

Sunday's win in Baltimore sets the Eagles up for a straight-ahead stretch run to this 2024 regular season: They are 10-2, winners of eight straight games. They have four of their final five regular-season games at Lincoln Financial Field. They have every intention of continuing their momentum.

Now the attention turns toward the Carolina Panthers, Sunday's opponents at Lincoln Financial Field. It's time to Clean Out the Notebook from Sunday and peek at the Panthers for the first time …

1. In the game of football, as much if not more than in any sport, success is linked with the performance of one position, and in Jalen Hurts the Eagles have one of the best quarterbacks in the entire NFL. There are many reasons for this team's 8-game winning streak, and Hurts' performance during this eight-game stretch is as impressive as the numbers indicate. To digest …

  • Hurts has averaged 9.1 yards per pass attempt, up from 7 yards in the 2-2 start.
  • His passing touchdown-to-interception ratio is 10-1. It was 4-4 after four games.
  • Hurts has compiled a passer rating of 114.1 in these eight wins.
  • He has a total of two giveaways in the eight victories after having seven in the opening four weeks.
  • Rushing touchdowns? Not even close. Hurts has 10 TDs on the ground in the eight wins. He had 2 in the 2-2 start to the season.

Correlating with the statistical success is the winning success. Hurts is now 9-3 (.750) against teams with a winning record entering matchups since the 2023 season, and that's tied for the second-highest quarterback winning percentage in that span (behind Baltimore's Lamar Jackson, 12-3).

So, as analysts continue to discuss how and why the Eagles are on such a roll, understand the context. Everyone is playing a part in the 10-2 season and the confidence in the team and in each other is high.

"Confidence I think is good for us," Hurts said on Sunday. "You go out there, you play, you prepare, and you set the table to say, 'This is what we're capable of,' and then, you might not take advantage of certain opportunities, and you still feel like you're capable of doing X, Y, Z. So, you ask yourself, 'Do I want to sit there and take a break?' We're playing really good football and rolling, or do I want to sit there and say, 'There's so much more I can do.' I'm going to stick on the other end, because feeling of unsatisfaction will keep you driving. I think that's what keeps me driving, that's what keeps this team going, and I think as we continue to learn from every experience we've had, we go out there and be wise and not make the same mistakes and do that. I think we're going in the right direction."

2. The defense has been on fire, as we know. Just how good have the Eagles been on that side of the football. Philadelphia has allowed 15.3 points per game since Week 6 (second-fewest in NFL. The Eagles allowed 24.0 PPG in Weeks 1-4 (23rd in NFL). Why the turnaround?

"I think a lot of guys on this defense and this team have been underdogs for a long time, having a chip on their shoulder," linebacker Zack Baun said after Sunday's win. "I know I have, and I know Nakobe (Dean, linebacker) has, and a lot of these linebackers also. And just playing aggressive. We want to grind on teams, and we want to wear them out, and that's what we did."

And that's what they've done, winning at the line of scrimmage, tackling extremely well, and covering on the back end with great communication.

3. This is a great quote from Head Coach Nick Sirianni on the Eagles running off most of the last 6-plus minutes on Sunday with an 11-play, 25-yard drive that amazingly consumed 5 minutes, 8 seconds off the clock. From Sirianni in his post-game press conference …

"Tough, physical, and that's against, a tough, physical football team. We were able to convert on a fourth-and-1. We were able to convert on a third-and-7, get them to use all of their timeouts. That was our thought in that process. We were going to run, run, run there. At first, we weren't in field goal range. We got ourselves into field goal range, and we got that first, first down. We got that first good run by Saquon (Barkley). Great job by the offensive line, because in those scenarios, it's going to be really muddy. They're going to load the box. They're going to try and do different things. Good job by (offensive coordinator) Kellen (Moore), calling it there. Of the runs that he called in those scenarios.

"Good job by our guys executing. Saquon hits a crease, and it gets us the first down. We get to a fourth- and-1. What happened on the third-and-1 gave me a lot of confidence to go for it on the fourth-and-1. Good job there, of those guys getting that push off the ball on that first quarterback sneak. That was like a full yard. I thought we kind of got it there. They didn't give us the spot, and it's hard to see. It gave me the confidence to go for it on the second one, as I was debating it. That is a debatable one, because you debate that and say, 'Man, we go up 12 points, that's a big deal'. Now they can't drive, get a field goal, get an onside kick or get a stop and now be able to beat you on the last one.

"The guys that gave me a lot of confidence, Chauncey (C.J. Gardner-Johnson) is like, 'Just trust us. We'll stop him if we don't get it.' Then DeVonta (Smith) is like, I love when DeVonta tells me to just go for it. 'We're going to get that quarterback sneak.' DeVonta has nothing to do with us getting that quarterback sneak, even when he's on the field. But he's like, 'Coach, go for it', and you know what? I love that about our team, that they have confidence in each other. I have confidence in them, they have confidence in each other, that goes back to, you know, that's not blind faith. That's faith based off of results of what we've done. I was close to going for it. I was hesitant a little bit to go up 12. Then, DeVonta and Chauncey kind of nudged me over the edge, right there to go for it. Good job by our offensive line. Lane (Johnson) looks over at me, signals first down, gives me a thumbs up. We've got a tough offensive line. We've got a tough defensive line. We've got a tough football team."

4. A quick note on running back Saquon Barkley and the history he is making this season: He recorded his eighth game with 100-plus rushing yards in 2024, tying the Eagles' single-season record for most 100-plus games (tied Wilbert Montgomery; 8 in 1981). Barkley's eight games are the most 100-plus rush yards games in the NFL this season and Barkley is the fourth player (5th instance) in NFL history with 1,700-plus scrimmage yards, 6.0-plus yards/touch, and 14-plus scrimmage touchdowns in a team's first 12 games of a season. The others to do it? Pro Football Hall of Famers Jim Brown (1963 & 1965), Walter Payton (1977), and O.J. Simpson (1975).
