Turning the page: 'We just really focus on whoever our next opponent is'

The Eagles' franchise-record 10 game win streak came to an end at the hands of the Commanders on Sunday afternoon with a 36-33 loss in the final seconds.

And despite how much there was to play for, the team is simply just focused on what's next.

"We just really focus on whoever our next opponent is. Whenever the playoffs get here, that's when the playoffs get here. Because at that time, the record doesn't even matter anymore. (We're) zero-zero. So, that's all we really focused on," Team captain Darius "Big Play" Slay said after the game.

Naturally, the noise outside of the NovaCare Complex will come. But the Eagles know that the only thing that matters is what is going on inside the building each and every day. They've said that at their best and they've said it at their worst.

The Eagles will have the opportunity to clinch the division for the second time in three years at home when the Cowboys visit on Sunday.

"It sucks. But at the end of the day, it is what it is, you know what I mean? We want to go out there and win every football game. That's the mindset and that's our mindset of the team. But at the same time, when we lose and we don't do what we wanted to accomplish, we're not going to panic," running back Saquon Barkley said about not clinching the division on Sunday. "At the end of the day we're going to stay locked in this locker room (and) keep believing in each other and finish the season strong."

In what was already a highly physical, highly emotional game, quarterback Jalen Hurts went out in the first quarter with a concussion. Backup Kenny Pickett came in and left it all out on the field, but it wasn't enough as Washington found the end zone with six seconds remaining to take the lead.

As bad as the loss hurts the players, they know that there's a bigger picture and that's playing football into February. But in order to get to that stage, the team knows they have to take it one game at a time.

"We're just focused on winning games and today's goal; we didn't achieve it. So, we're not focused on that (the one seed)," offensive tackle Jordan Mailata said. "It doesn't make the journey any harder, though. It's all part of the journey. It's just the next game. Now, yes, figuratively, that sounds nice, the top seed would have been nice. But then again, man, like this is football. You just have to play the next down."

Sunday's loss marked the first defeat of the season since September 29 in Tampa Bay. The Eagles adjusted out of the bye week, and rattled off wins in their next 10 games, with half of them being by double digits. They also have not lost back-to-back games this year, as they responded to their Monday Night Football loss to the Falcons with a 15-12 win on the road in New Orleans on a short week.

But as the Eagles know and say so often, once January comes, anything that happened in the regular season means very little if anything at all.

Right now, the focus inside the building is on one thing – the Dallas Cowboys.

"In the NFL, it's hard to get a win. They did what they needed to do to win and what we have to do is just move on to next week and focus on the Cowboys," defensive tackle Jalen Carter said in the visitors' locker room at Northwest Stadium after the game.

"Do I look frustrated? I'm not frustrated at all; we're moving on to next week. Just like how it is in college, when you get to the playoffs, your record is 0-0, it's win or go home then. But we're not worried about the playoffs right now, we have the Cowboys coming up and that's what we're worried about, that's it. That's a big game."

The loss is going to be what the team makes of it and how they respond will show what type of team they will be as the playoffs inch closer.

"We know we have to play better, but we're going to use this to build on it," linebacker Nakobe Dean said. "It's time to practice what we preach now as far as continuing to get better. This is adversity, so how we handle it and how we grow from it and not only handle it but get better from it is going to be a testament to this team."
