A career-high 175 rushing yards and a touchdown from D'Andre Swift gave the Eagles a high-scoring 38-24 victory in the 2023 home opener over the Minnesota Vikings to improve to 2-0 with a long break before their Week 3 game on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"Obviously, we didn't play our cleanest game," said Head Coach Nick Sirianni. "I think the first week was a cleaner game for the defense and not as clean for the offense and vice versa with tonight. We are 2-0. A lot of teams would like to be sitting 2-0."

Find out how the game unfolded:

First Quarter

  • Field Goal! Jake Elliott ended the opening drive with a 24-yard field goal. A 54-yard bomb from Jalen Hurts to DeVonta Smith got the Eagles into the red zone, but they could not find the end zone. Elliott, the reigning NFC Special Teams Player of the Week, started the season 5/5 on field goals. (Eagles 3, Vikings 0)
  • After a quick first down from the Vikings, the Eagles forced the visitors to punt. Back-to-back quarterback pressures from Josh Sweat and Jordan Davis on second and third down put a halt to the Vikings' opening drive.
  • FUMBLE! Justin Evans forced the ball loose on a punt return. Nicholas Morrow, playing his first game as an Eagle, recovered the fumble.
  • "I was excited," Evans said. "I did not even really understand what was going on because stuff happens so fast. You do not really get time to think."
  • On the ensuing drive, Jalen Hurts threw an interception to Theo Jackson at the Minnesota 35-yard line. A promising drive that was led by strong running from D'Andre Swift fell short.
  • FUMBLE! Avonte Maddox poked the ball loose from running back Alexander Mattison and Justin Evans was there to recover. The Vikings' second drive ended on the first play.
  • "We practice trying to turn the ball over," cornerback Darius Slay said. "We are always punching and ripping at the ball. I guess teams have to get better with ball security because we practice it a lot."
  • The Eagles failed to do anything with the turnover, ending their short drive with a missed 55-yard field goal attempt by Elliott, his first of the season.

Second Quarter

  • The Vikings found the end zone for the first touchdown of the evening. Kirk Cousins found his tight end T.J. Hockenson for a 5-yard score. (Vikings 7, Eagles 3)
  • TOUCHDOWN! Jalen Hurts found the end zone with the all-familiar tush push! A drive that lasted 7:55 featured 16 plays, 13 of them runs. Eight of the runs were by Swift who found a groove in his first game playing for his hometown team.
  • "The offensive line was great," Swift said. "They made it a little bit easier and I just tried to make the most of the opportunities I was given out there."
  • The Eagles forced a third turnover of the game in the wildest way. Justin Jefferson was headed to the front corner of the left side of the end zone when Terrell Edmunds forced the ball loose. The ball went over the pylon and out of the end zone for a touchback. The Birds caught a break right before the end of the half. This was Edmunds' first forced fumble in his six-year career.
  • "I was hoping it went out of bounds," Edmunds said. "It was a huge moment. It is a long game, so you never know what can happen. That was a key part to get our offense back on the field and stop them from taking the lead."
  • FIELD GOAL! Jake Elliott, take a bow! He nailed a 61-yard field goal to end the half, tying his career-high from Week 3 in 2017. This also tied the franchise record for longest kick, of course, owned by Elliott. The Eagles ended the first 30 minutes on a high. (Eagles 13, Vikings 7)
  • "The range was definitely not that far going that way," Elliott said. "Hit a bit of a stinger, if you will, but it got there. I hit it higher on the ball and sometimes it's hard to keep those kicks straight but luckily it pushed right through and got there."

Third Quarter

  • FUMBLE! The fourth Minnesota turnover of the game! Josh Sweat hit the ball loose from Cousins and it was picked up by Fletcher Cox.
  • "Guys were determined to create turnovers," Cox said. "We tried to get the ball back for the offense, steal some possessions. I should have scored, but the most important thing is that we got the ball back for the offense and they scored a couple plays later."
  • TOUCHDOWN! Jalen Hurts had his second 1-yard score of the night, just 1:07 into the second half. A quick, two-play drive with the only other play being a 6-yard Swift run. (Eagles 20, Vikings 7)
  • TOUCHDOWN! QB1 to Smitty! Hurts connected with Smith on another long bomb, this time for a 63-yard score. (Eagles 27, Vikings 7)
  • "I think it kind of just happened," Hurts said. "It was kind of a check there, me and Smitty communicating. It was a big play, a big play in the game. That is what everybody wants to see, so I am happy they got to see one of those today."
  • Minnesota struck back with a long touchdown of its own. Cousins found Jordan Addison for a 62-yard score. The wide receiver beat Josh Jobe down the field and broke free from his tackle attempt. (Eagles 27, Vikings 14)

Fourth Quarter

  • The Vikings crawled back into the game. Cousins finds K.J. Osborn for a 10-yard touchdown. The Vikings marched 86 yards down the field in just 3:38. (Eagles 27, Vikings 21)
  • TOUCHDOWN! Have a homecoming D'Andre Swift! The Philadelphia native earned a well-deserved touchdown after a tremendous performance. He rushed for 63 yards, including his longest run of the night, a 43-yarder, on the drive alone, punching it home from 2 yards away. (Eagles 34, Vikings 21)
  • "I knew that was my last time to get a touchdown," Swift said. "We were calling a QB sneak after that."
  • The Vikings found the end zone with just over a minute to go in the game. T.J. Hockenson caught his second touchdown of the night, a 5-yard score. (Eagles 34, Vikings 28)
  • DeVonta Smith used his great hands to recover Minnesota's onside kick attempt.
  • Cousins' long Hail Mary attempt with seven seconds left was knocked incomplete by a bundle of Birds! EAGLES WIN!
