Spadaro: Where does Saquon Barkley's superlative start rank in Eagles history?

We see the impact Saquon Barkley has had on the Eagles – the tough runs inside, the way he's finished in the red zone, his square-up blocking in pass protection, and, of course, the breakaway runs that have moved the chains and, in fact, turned games around.

In his first three games as an Eagle, Barkley has been superlative. He has an NFL-best 351 rushing yards, is tied for the league lead with 5 touchdowns, and has scored the most points (34, with five touchdowns and two two-point conversions) of any positional player. Barkley is averaging 5.6 yards per carry, second to Chargers' running back J.K. Dobbins among the top rushing leaders in the NFL.

Barkley has also added 10 receptions, one for a touchdown to open the season against Green Bay, and he has 53 receiving yards.

"Everything I do is a credit to the players around me," Barkley said last week, days before his 147-yard, 2-touchdown, 2-point conversion performance against New Orleans that included a 65-yard touchdown run to key a 15-point fourth quarter. "I trust the way we're running the offense and what we are doing and our offensive line is the best in the league, in my opinion. Those guys make it easy for me. You just take what the defense gives you, you try to run hard on every play and follow the blocking and good things happen."

Good things are indeed happening for Barkley, who has had the kind of start that puts him at the top of many outstanding opening three games for Eagles running backs. Let's take a look at some of the other first three games for Eagles running backs, including some of the seasons for LeSean McCoy, who will be inducted into the franchise's Hall of Fame in November and who rushed for more than 1,000 yards in four of his six seasons in Philadelphia.

Twenty-one times in Eagles history, players have rushed for more than 1,000 yards. McCoy holds the franchise record with 1,607 rushing yards in 2013 and Montgomery ran for 1,512 yards in the 1979 season. Watters gained 1,411 in 1996, Mongomery picked up 1,402 in 1981, and Westbrook had 1,333 in 2007.

It is early, and a lot can happen, but Barkley is off to a great start by any measurable.
