Bobby King is in his second year as the Philadelphia Eagles' inside linebackers coach after joining the team during the 2024 offseason.
King assisted one of the most impactful linebacker corps in the NFL in 2024, as the unit helped the Eagles capture the Super Bowl LIX Championship after producing the No. 1-ranked total defense (278.4 ypg). In addition, Philadelphia led the league in defensive points allowed per game (16.9) and opponent three-and-out percentage (39.0 pct.) while finishing third in third-down defense (35.5 pct.) and fifth in red zone defense (50.0 pct.).
Under King's direction, Zack Baun was honored as an Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year finalist after moving to inside linebacker for the first time in his career in 2024. A first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowler who had the highest Pro Football Focus grade (90.1) by a linebacker, Baun registered a career-high 150 tackles (second-most by an Eagle since 1994) and tied for second in the league with five forced fumbles. During the playoffs, Baun became just the second NFL linebacker dating back to 1991 to record takeaways in each of their first four career postseason starts.
King also helped Baun and Nakobe Dean (128, fourth-most by an Eagle since 1994) finish as one of two linebacker duos in the league with 125-plus tackles each in 2024. From Week 6 after Philadelphia's bye through the end of the season, Baun (91.5) and Dean (88.3) ranked first and second, respectively, among linebackers in PFF defensive grade. Furthermore, Oren Burks relieved Dean after a season-ending injury in the NFC Wild Card and tallied 24 tackles with two forced fumbles in four games (three starts), leading all linebackers in the playoffs with an 80.7 PFF defensive grade.
Before joining the Eagles' coaching staff, King served as the inside linebackers coach for the Tennessee Titans from 2022-23.
During his second season with the Titans in 2023, King contributed to a defense that ranked first in the NFL in red zone touchdown efficiency (37.7 pct.). In addition, King steered Azeez Al-Shaair to a career-high 163 tackles, which ranked fifth overall in the league, with nine tackles for loss.
In 2022, King oversaw a linebacker room that helped Tennessee pace the league in both rushing defense (76.9 ypg) and opponent yards per rush (3.4). Moreover, the Titans' linebackers helped limit opponents to just nine rushing scores all season, which tied for the third fewest in the NFL.
Prior to his arrival in Tennessee, King spent five seasons (2017-21) with the Houston Texans in various roles. As the Texans' defensive line coach in 2021, King helped defensive end Jonathan Greenard to a breakout campaign as he posted a team-high eight sacks despite missing five games.
King served as Houston's inside linebackers coach for three seasons (2018-20). In 2020, King directed Zach Cunningham to a league-leading 163 tackles. Moreover, Cunningham and Tyrell Adams (122) finished as the only NFL duo to finish in the top 15 in tackles that season.
In 2019, King facilitated a standout season from Cunningham, who recorded the sixth-most tackles (137) in Texans single-season history at the time. King also guided Benardrick McKinney to his first career Pro Bowl after he totaled 105 tackles, seven passes defended, and 1.5 sacks during the 2018 season. In 2017, when King returned to Houston as the linebackers coach, Cunningham ranked second among rookies in tackles (82).
From 2014-16, King was the assistant linebackers coach for the San Diego Chargers, where he worked alongside Nick Sirianni. During the 2015 campaign, King helped guide Melvin Ingram to his first career year with double-digit sacks (10.5), which tied for the 12th-most in the league.
Before his time with the Chargers, King enjoyed his first stint with the Houston Texans as the assistant linebackers coach (2012-13). In 2012, King aided a unit that finished seventh in the NFL in total defense (323.3 ypg).
King began his NFL coaching career in 2010 as a defensive quality control coach with the Dallas Cowboys under Wade Phillips' direction.
In 2008, King returned to West Texas A&M for his second stint as the program's defensive line coach. In 2009, he worked on a coaching staff that led the team to its first bowl game appearance since 1967.
During the 2006-07 seasons, King served as a graduate assistant at Baylor, where he worked primarily with the defensive line.
In 2005, King coached a defensive line at West Texas A&M that helped the team improve its win total by eight from the previous year. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, Texas-El Paso, from 2002-03.
A native of Louisville, KY, King was a three-year starter (1998-2000) on the defensive line at Texas-El Paso.
He and his wife, Elizabeth, have a son, Jackson Robert, and a daughter, Chloe Elizabeth.
