The Eagles announced on Friday that they have placed starting left tackle Jordan Mailata on Injured Reserve. Mailata suffered a hamstring injury in Sunday's win over the Cleveland Browns. He will miss at least the next four games. The Eagles now have an open spot on the active roster ahead of Sunday's game against the New York Giants.
The Eagles have not said who will start Sunday against the Giants in Mailata's position. Fred Johnson has been the primary backup swing tackle this season, but right guard Mekhi Becton boasts starting left tackle experience from his days in New York with the Jets. Johnson replaced Mailata against the Browns.
Mailata took over as a starter in the middle of the 2020 season and has been a fixture at the left tackle spot, forming one of the league's best bookend tackle situations with perennial All-Pro Lane Johnson. The Eagles signed Mailata to a contract extension this offseason. A two-time Pro Bowl alternate, Mailata has graded out through the first six weeks of the season as the top pass-blocking tackle and the fourth-ranked overall tackle in the league, according to Pro Football Focus.
