Eagles Sign RB Mallett

The Eagles reached into the Canadian Football League on Tuesday to add to their depth at running back. They signed Martell Mallett, who spent the 2009 season as a member of the CFL's BC Lions, where he rushed for 1,280 yards and six touchdowns on 214 carries (5.8-yard average), adding 43 receptions for 342 yards and two touchdowns. The 6-0, 210-pound Mallett was named to the West Division All-Star team and also earned the 2009 CFL Most Outstanding Rookie award.

The 23-year-old Mallett played collegiately at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, where he rushed for 2,896 yards and 27 touchdowns in his four-year career. The Pine Bluff, Arkansas native earned first-team all-SWAC honors as a senior in 2008.

What does it mean? It means that Mallett obviously impressed the Eagles enough in a recent workout to earn a contract. He comes into a position that already has Brian Westbrook, LeSean McCoy and Eldra Buckley. Is he good enough to make the team?

Check back in the spring and summer for that answer.
