The Eagles announced the signing of safety Deshawntee Gallon on Monday. There was an open roster spot following the release of linebacker Corey Nelson on Sunday.
Gallon was a rookie free agent signing of the Arizona Cardinals in 2017 out of Georgia Southern. Gallon spent the preseason with the Cardinals, but was released in the cutdown to 53. The 24-year-old was a linebacker/safety hybrid player for the Eagles of Georgia Southern. At 5-9, 204 pounds, Gallon was a first-team All-Sun Belt selection in 2016 after registering 102 tackles, six for loss, and six passes defensed. Philadelphia reportedly showed interest in Gallon before the 2017 draft.
Gallon's addition makes sense after safety Stephen Roberts was waived on Saturday. The Eagles need depth at the position heading into the final preseason game this Thursday against the Jets (7 p.m., NBC Philadelphia) at Lincoln Financial Field.
