The Raiders' experiment with quarterback Terrelle Pryor is virtually over as the team reportedly will release him. (UPDATE: Oakland traded Pryor to Seattle for a seventh-round pick on Monday after this was originally posted.) Oakland acquired a Pro Bowl quarterback this offseason trading for former Houston Texans signal caller Matt Schaub. The two-time Pro Bowl quarterback was one of six former Pro Bowl players acquired this offseason by the Raiders.
With no glaring holes thanks to the work done in the offseason, Oakland can focus on landing a young player who could provide immediate impact or select a prospect with plenty of upside who might need some time to learn.
With the way that the first four picks have shaken out, let's look at some of the top projected options available and where the Raiders stand at each spot.
Starting with offense, the Raiders acquired Schaub, but he will be 33 years old and is coming off a down season in Houston. Oakland could view Schaub as the bridge to Teddy Bridgewater or Blake Bortles or Derek Carr.
Who is Schaub's top target? Former Packers receiver James Jones was added in free agency, but last year's top receivers were Rod Streater and Denarius Moore. There's some young promise here, but plenty of question marks. Mike Evans or Eric Ebron would instantly add size and explosiveness on the outside or in the slot.
Schaub and new running back Maurice Jones-Drew could receive some added protection up front from either Taylor Lewan or Jake Matthews.
On defense, the interior pass rush would get an added jolt with defensive tackle Aaron Donald. A third-down package featuring Donald and newly acquired end Justin Tuck could pose threats for the rest of the quarterbacks in the division.
Khalil Mack remains on the board and would provide help in the form of another edge rusher, although Sio Moore had 4.5 sacks and plays the same strong side position that Mack played at Buffalo. Anthony Barr played his college football at UCLA and could make the move six hours north to Oakland.
Who did Nick Foles throw his seven touchdowns against last season? The Raiders used a first-round pick on D.J. Hayden last year, but Justin Gilbert would add more talent to the mix.
There are plenty of tempting options at the Raiders' disposal, but where they go is ultimately up to you.
