The Eagles returned for their second preseason game on Thursday night against the Patriots.

The Eagles came away victorious yet again, securing the win 14-13 in game No. 2.

While a handful of the first team started on defense, with the likes of Bryce Huff, Devin White, and Zack Baun out there, the offense did not play its starters. Head Coach Nick Sirianni cited after the game that the extensive joint practice with the Patriots on Tuesday provided enough work for the offense. Rookie wide receiver Johnny Wilson was out tonight as he is in concussion protocol.

Tyler Steen exited the game in the first quarter and was later carted off the field with an ankle injury. The Eagles ruled him out for the remainder of the game. Along with Steen, wide receiver John Ross left the game in the second half due to the concussion protocol.

First Quarter

  • The Eagles' defense came away with its first interception of the preseason as Avonte Maddox picked off Jacoby Brissett in the end zone with 7:16 left in the quarter. The Patriots made it down to the 8-yard line before a Zack Baun tackle for no gain set up the interception on the following play.
  • The turnover led to points for the Eagles' offense as Jake Elliott opened up the scoring with a 42-yard field goal with 3:08 left in the quarter after a few nice throws from Kenny Pickett. (Eagles 3 – Patriots 0)
  • Tyler Steen left the game due to an ankle injury with 1:21 remaining in the quarter. Nick Gates replaced the injured Steen. Offensive lineman Matt Hennessy is not available tonight (reason undisclosed).
  • Said Pickett of the Patriots playing their starters: "I think they had their top guys in there for a while too. And that's a great opportunity for us twos and threes and a bunch of guys are trying to make this team to go out there and compete against the best that they have."

Second Quarter

  • Tyler Steen was carted to the locker room with an ankle injury that will rule him out for the game.
  • "I actually haven't got with the medical guys yet, so I don't know. I don't know how he's feeling yet. We'll get that information to you guys," Head Coach Nick Sirianni said when asked about Steen's injury after the game.
  • The Patriots got on the board to even the game after a 51-yard field goal from Joey Slye. Kelee Ringo forced his receiver out of bounds for an incompletion on third down to hold New England to 3. (Eagles 3 – Patriots 3)
  • Will Shipley continued his success from last week after making a catch out of the backfield that led to a 19-yard gain on 2nd-and-22 behind blocks from Dylan McMahon and Gates that would eventually lead to an Eagles first down.
  • The Patriots scored the first touchdown of the game with 2 minutes left in the quarter on a 4-yard run from Drake Maye. (Patriots 10 – Eagles 3)

Third Quarter

  • Tanner McKee opened up the second half for the Eagles and made a beautiful throw to E.J. Jenkins toward the right sideline for a gain of 13 yards on 3rd-and-3.
  • Ross went to the locker room to be evaluated for a concussion leaving the Eagles down another wide receiver in the game.
  • A.J. Brown and the rest of the Eagles' sideline got into it as Joseph Ngata came up with two catches for 33 yards on the second drive of the quarter.
  • The first sack of the night for the Eagles came with 3:27 remaining in the quarter as Nolan Smith got right into the backfield to take down Maye for a loss of 8 yards to force the Patriots to punt.
  • Will Grier came in at quarterback with 2:37 left in the quarter, picking up a 3rd-and-1 with his legs on an 8-yard rush.

Fourth Quarter

  • Grier led the Eagles down field with the help of a 19-yard reception by Jenkins to get into field goal range. Elliott knocked in his second kick of the night from 38 yards out. (Patriots 10 – Eagles 6)
  • The Patriots got down the field with Joe Milton to set themselves up with a 45-yard field goal from Slye to extend their lead. (Patriots 13 – Eagles 6)
  • McKee came back into the game for Grier with 10:05 left in the game. McKee looked impressive in his drive, completing two big passes to Ngata, one for 16 yards and another for 28 yards to set the Eagles up at the 4.
  • Kendall Milton finished off the drive with a 1-yard rush for a touchdown and Ainias Smith caught the 2-point conversion to give the Eagles the lead with 4:23 remaining. (Eagles 14 – Patriots 13)
  • Thomas Booker kept the momentum going on defense, sacking Milton for a loss of 7 yards. Just two plays later, he was there again to help Terrell Lewis get the sack and force the Patriots off the field.
  • The defense prevailed once again for the Birds, as a bad snap from the Patriots was recovered by Brandon Smith with 1:47 remaining to seal the win for the Eagles.
