Arguably the greatest tackle in Philadelphia Eagles history, Jason Peters was signed to a one-year extension on Wednesday through the 2019 season.
"It means a lot. This is reassurance that I'm going to retire here and don't have to go year to year. It's just another way of them reassuring that I'm going to be here," Peters said after signing his deal. "I love Mr. (Jeffrey) Lurie, the whole organization, the City of Philadelphia, and the fans. It speaks volumes for them to still look at me that way, it's nothing but love."
"Jason is a future Hall of Famer, a great player, and leader," Howie Roseman said. "He has been an anchor for our offensive line for many years and now we are thrilled about being able to work something out that will allow him to finish his career here in Philadelphia."
Peters was acquired by the Eagles in a trade with the Buffalo Bills in 2009. Philadelphia gave up a bounty of draft picks - a first-round pick, a fourth-round pick, and a sixth-round pick - to obtain a franchise left tackle and the move paid off in a big way.
Since arriving in Philadelphia, Peters has been named to the Pro Bowl seven times. The only year he wasn't selected to play in the all-star game was when he missed the 2012 campaign due to an Achilles injury. Only one Eagle, Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Chuck Bednarik, has more Pro Bowl nominations in team history.
Peters is well respected by his peers. He has been named to the NFL's Top 100 Players list multiple times. At age 35, entering his 14th season, he is coming off another strong campaign having started all 16 games and playing 97 percent of the team's offensive snaps.
"Having Jason out there, we all know what he means to this team," center Jason Kelce said on Tuesday. "You know he's going to be ready and you know he's going to be a great player. He is a difference-maker for this football team."
Peters originally entered the league in 2004 with the Bills as a rookie free agent tight end. He was moved to left tackle and earned two Pro Bowl berths before coming to Philadelphia.
