It should have been a game in which LeSean McCoy got to celebrate setting a franchise scoring record.
Instead, McCoy spent more time after the game answering questions about someone who wasn't even on the field.
McCoy's 1-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter was the ninth straight game he scored a touchdown. That broke the franchise record of eight straight games previously set by Hall of Fame running back Steve Van Buren back in 1947. McCoy is the first Eagle ever to score a touchdown in each of the first nine games of the season. In fact, there are only three other NFL players since 1960 to accomplish that feat - Lenny Moore, O.J. Simpson and George Rogers.
"It's tough to enjoy a thing like that, not with the way the season's gone for us," McCoy said.
The Eagles lost to Arizona on Sunday after leading in the fourth quarter for the fifth time this season, 21-17, to fall to 3-6 on the season. The Eagles were without DeSean Jackson, who was inactive for the game after he missed a team meeting. McCoy was the focal point of the offense, as he has been all season, racking up 81 yards on 14 carries and catching three passes for 12 yards.
However, McCoy only had 1 yard on two carries in the decisive fourth quarter which saw Arizona outscore the Eagles 14-3.
"They kept bringing guys into the box. That's probably why we threw the ball as much as we did," McCoy said.
McCoy entered the game as the league's leader in rushing yards, tied for first in rushing touchdowns and tied for first in total touchdowns. On the Eagles' final offensive drive, McCoy didn't get the ball on any of the six plays and Michael Vick was eventually intercepted by A.J. Jefferson. McCoy did, however, commit a rare holding penalty on that drive. Head coach Andy Reid defended the playcalling by saying that the offense wanted to take advantage of what was presented by the defense, echoing what McCoy said.
"They played a lot of single safety high and they were putting an extra guy in the box," Reid said. "We thought we could do what we needed to do to add points on the board."
McCoy is having a season for the ages in Philadelphia. That still deserves to be appreciated despite the overall struggles of the team.
