There are few ways to describe what happened to the Eagles on Sunday, but running back LeSean McCoy is willing to give it a shot.
"It's embarrassing," he said after the game. "For a team to put up that many points and for our offense not to respond, that's embarrassing. We had no answer for them. I was embarrassed (Sunday). They played a lot better than us. We just have to get better."
It was a difficult day for the Eagles offense as a whole. The Falcons jumped out to an early 14-0 lead which forced the Eagles to play from behind the entire game. As a result, McCoy was unable to get into a groove in the run game. While he did have a rushing and a receiving touchdown, his day was otherwise quiet. He gained only 45 yards on 16 carries and had only 22 yards on three catches.
The offense was forced to pass through for nearly the entire game, but McCoy still had opportunities to show why he's one of the best backs in the NFL. The elusive McCoy scored an early rushing touchdown to keep the Eagles in the game. He also picked up a critical first down on third-and-2 in the fourth quarter that led to a field goal. McCoy also sent linebacker Sean Weatherspoon out of the game with an ankle injury after shaking him loose in the fourth quarter.
Unfortunately, that level of play has been absent for many of the team's other players.
"We're not capitalizing," McCoy said. "We are not doing the small things. We are not playing at a high level like we should be. That's the only way I can explain it."
As bad as it may look now, the Eagles have been in this position before and thrived. The Eagles have made the playoffs five times after slow starts to the year. Even last year's squad was able to overcome inconsistency to win four games in a row at the end of the season. McCoy sees that as an example of what can happen when the team is clicking. All it will take to get back there, he said, is heart.
"We have been in bad positions before," he explained. "Last year we almost had a chance to come back and get in the playoffs. I don't think guys are quitting, but we have to show more heart and more effort on the field."
Despite the team's 3-4 record, McCoy isn't panicking. He isn't looking back, either. With nine games to go, the Eagles cannot afford any more missteps if they want to keep their playoff aspirations alive.
"We have to forget about this game, have a short memory, and come back next week and get a win," he said. "There is no time to dwell on the losses. We can't focus on the negatives. We have to keep it positive and keep going."
