The Good: Stout, run-defending linebacker who showed improvement in his game the past two seasons. Effectively quarterbacks the defense, hustles to make plays, and has a non-stop motor. Squares and wraps up tackling, bringing ball-carriers down on initial contact. Relentless in pursuit of the action, explodes up the field, filling gaps and sells out. Shows a good head for the ball in run defense.
The Bad: Tight in his hips, lacks the smooth change of direction and lateral speed. Struggles in coverage, does not get depth on drops.
The Verdict: McLaughlin is a prototypical two-down linebacker best in the box or up the field. Should have a home on the inside of a 3-4 alignment if he produces on special teams.
