Mornhinweg Impressed With Young's Poise

In his first start as an Eagle, quarterback Vince Young's stats wouldn't overwhelm you.

He was 23-of-36 (63.9 percent) for 258 yards with two touchdowns against three interceptions against the Giants.

But look at his numbers in the second half alone. After Young got his feet under him, he went 15-of-18 for 169 yards with a touchdown, an interception and a 103.2 QB rating. On the game-winning, 18-play drive, Young was 7-of-9 for 67 yards with the 8-yard touchdown to Riley Cooper.

Young has taken the first-team reps at practice this week with Michael Vick still sidelined with the rib injury. If Young has to start this Sunday against New England, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will hope that Young can build off of what he deemed a "highly impressive" performance.

"Vince is a highly talented young man. He's really sharp. He's worked his tail off for several months since he's been here, and certainly last week," Mornhinweg said. "There were a couple (mistakes) there, but big picture, his decision-making was excellent. There were a couple throws, on the interceptions especially, that the timing was pretty good and the decision was pretty good. I do know that with more practice and playing time, I think he'll be able to hit those."

Despite his athletic ability to make plays out of the pocket, Young was poised in the pocket and consistently went through his progressions and reads. The offensive line helped provide a clean pocket and plenty of time to throw as Young was sacked only once by the league's top pass rush in terms of sacks.

The focal point of the Giants game plan was to limit LeSean McCoy's effectiveness, which they did for the most part until the league's leading rusher broke off a season-long 60-yard run in the fourth quarter to seal the win. With the Patriots and quarterback Tom Brady coming to town on Sunday, Mornhinweg admitted that he will try to help extend the offensive drives to in turn help the defense.

"He's a special quarterback, one of the very best to ever play, hands down. So yeah. You saw at the end of the last game, (Giants QB) Eli (Manning) was hot, and has done, up to that point, an unbelievable job late in games. We tried to take a little bit of the clock," Mornhinweg said. "There was still too much time, but sure, absolutely."

Young, if called upon, will certainly look to assist Mornhinweg while building upon the success that he had in the second half of Sunday night's win.
