Head Coach Nick Sirianni announced that veteran defensive end Brandon Graham will be out for the rest of the season with a triceps tear at his Tuesday press conference.
"Can't say enough good things about BG. I think you guys have asked me this a couple of times, just everybody in every workplace needs a Brandon Graham. His energy is contagious. If you're having a bad day, and you get around him, he can turn your day positive. Obviously, the player speaks for itself and the play on the field. He's having a great year, just can't say enough about him as a leader, as a captain, as a teammate," Sirianni said.
"His leadership is very special. BG is going to be around and he's going to be still leading. I know that man can lead when he's on the field, when he's off the field, no matter what, and I'm excited that we still have his leadership and everything that he feeds this football team."
Despite a thrilling 37-20 victory over the Rams in Los Angeles, Graham left the game in the fourth quarter with what the team called an elbow injury.
Graham told reporters in the locker room after the game that he would be out for the season but remained positive through it all.
"We pour everything we can into this game. When I say I trust God, I trust God. I'm about to enjoy this little rehab and then I'm about to enjoy leading this team the rest of the year. As soon as I can be back out there, I'm going to be back out there. But man, we were having fun out there and we're still going to have fun. As a player, I'm out for the year," Graham said Sunday night from the SoFi Stadium locker room.
Graham, playing in his franchise-record 15th season, has 20 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 6 TFLs this season.
The 6th-year captain was playing arguably his best football of the season in the Rams game, Graham was Pro Football Focus' highest-rated player in the game, before going down with the injury.
Graham had a quarterback sack, a tipped pass, three QB hits, and two TFLs.
"I'm devastated for him because he's probably one of the best leaders I've been around. Not only how he plays, but how he mentors the young guys on and off the field. He's kind of like a father figure to a lot of these guys. A guy that his story just screams perseverance and resiliency with everything he's overcome," right tackle Lane Johnson said.
Graham is the Eagles' all-time leader in games played, with 206, and moved into third all-time in sacks on Sunday (76.5).
While no one is sure if this is it for Graham, he knows the mindset he has to have going forward as a leader on this team.
"I don't want to go out like this, but if it's pointing toward that, we'll see. I don't know what the team's going to be feeling at that time, but I know for me, I don't want to go out like this. I definitely want to finish a whole season before I'm done, but if that's not in the cards, I'm content where I'm at too," Graham said.
"All I know is they're not done with me yet, so I'm going to be out there and make sure I can be the best leader I can be like I always do. Keep bringing the energy and let people know how lucky they are that I am out."
Everyone in the building at the NovaCare Complex knows that Graham will stay active around the team no matter how long he is out.
As one of the most influential and experienced players in the history of the city, Graham's absence will be felt.
"He's been here for years. He's an integral part of this defense. He's an integral part of this team. When you have a guy like him go down, of course his presence is still going to be there, but it just doesn't feel the same when he's not on the field with you," defensive tackle Jordan Davis said.
Graham knows better than anyone that although he won't be out there on the field, he can still contribute and be there for his teammates.
"I know the guys still need me as far as just making sure I'm watching them, telling them little stuff I see on the sideline, and I'm going to be the best leader I can be because I'm committed. I'm all the way in and we have got something special here and we have to keep building. We haven't done nothing yet," Graham said.
"We're going to see where we go from here, but I'm hoping we're holding that trophy regardless at the end. I'm going to do my part as far as a captain. The mission is still the mission, and I'm going to be me. Still going to have fun, still going to talk my stuff, and like I said, people are lucky I'm done. But they better know someone is coming right behind me." – Written by Liam Wichser
