RB Dexter McCluster, Mississippi | |||||
Pos. Rank: 6 | Grade: 2nd Round | Height: 5-8 1/2 | Weight: 172 | 40: 4.41 | Year: 4-Sr. |
The Good: Explosive multi-purpose player who's a threat to score any time the ball is in his hands. Plays with great quickness, explosion, and shows a burst of speed. Sets up defenders, makes them miss, and weaves his way on the inside carrying the ball. Incredibly elusive and easily creates his own yardage. Patient, follows blocks yet runs hard on the inside, keeping his feet driving up the field, working to break tackles. Displays some shake and bake in his run, finds the cutback lanes, and quickly gets through them without losing momentum. Plays with a great degree of toughness in his overall game as a blocker and ball-carrier. Solid receiver out of the backfield who extends to make the reception away from his frame. Presents himself as a downfield threat catching the ball. Runs sharp routes, stays low on exit then positions himself to make the reception. Displays good awareness on the field and has a nice sense of knowing what's happening.
The Bad: Possesses size limitations and not a heavy-duty ball handler who can take a licking. Lack of height may be a problem as a pass catcher out of the backfield. Displays skill as a return specialist yet has been marginally productive in that area at Mississippi.
The Verdict: McCluster is a terrific football player who gets the most out of his ability and causes a positive impact on the field. Productive handling the ball, he also does the little things well, helping the quarterback sell the ball fakes or blocking when called upon. McCluster should easily find a home at the next level as a specialty player who lines up in the backfield, out on the flanks, and is asked to return punts and kicks.
