The Eagles signed a pair of familiar faces to the practice squad on Thursday, adding quarterback Ian Book and running back Lew Nichols.
After releasing tight end Kevin Foelsch from the practice squad on Tuesday, the Eagles made additional room by releasing cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields on Thursday.
"Highly productive college career," Head Coach Nick Sirianni said of Book on Thursday. "We had an opportunity to get him after he had played a little in New Orleans. Really enjoyed our time with him when he was here. Had some high hopes for him."
A fourth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2021, Book (6-foot, 206 pounds) was claimed off waivers by the Eagles at the end of the 2022 preseason and spent the entire season on the active roster. He dressed for two games, but did not play. He returned in 2023, but did not make the roster out of Training Camp. He briefly spent time with the New England Patriots on their practice squad in 2023 and was with the Kansas City Chiefs this past offseason.
At Notre Dame, Book finished his college career as the school's all-time winningest quarterback (30-5 record) and was a two-time captain, leading the Fighting Irish to two College Football Playoff appearances.
Nichols returns to the Eagles after spending Training Camp and preseason with the team in 2024. He originally entered the NFL as a seventh-round pick of the Packers out of Central Michigan in 2023. He joined the Eagles' practice squad in October of his rookie season and finished the year in Philadelphia. He returned on a reserve/future deal in 2024.
Nichols (5-10, 220 pounds) rushed for 3,061 yards, added 575 receiving yards, and scored 29 total touchdowns in 32 games at Central Michigan. He was the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2021.
Castro-Fields (6-1, 197 pounds) joined the Eagles' practice squad in October. Originally drafted by the 49ers in 2022 out of Penn State, he was on the Panthers' active roster earlier this season as well. He played in 52 career games at Penn State and accounted for 25 pass deflections and three interceptions, earning All-Big Ten Third-Team honors while in Happy Valley.
