Roster Moves: Eagles sign DB Tariq Castro-Fields, DB Mekhi Garner, and DE Charles Harris to practice squad

Roster Moves

The Eagles are bringing back some familiar faces to their practice squad. Here is a look at the series of roster moves announced on Tuesday.

Signed defensive backs Tariq Castro-Fields and Mekhi Garner, and defensive end Charles Harris

The Eagles signed Castro-Fields on October 21 to the practice squad and are bringing him back after releasing him last Thursday.

The former Penn State Nittany Lion was drafted in the sixth round of the 2022 draft by the 49ers, where he was waived after a few months with the team. He was then picked up by the Commanders, where he played in eight games, recording four tackles.

Castro-Fields was picked up on waiver claims to begin the 2024 season by the Panthers, where he played nine snaps on special teams. The Upper Marlboro, Maryland native played in 52 games at Penn State, starting 30 of them. He recorded 138 tackles (93 solo), 10 tackles for loss, three interceptions, and 25 pass breakups during his career.

Garner played in one game for the Eagles in 2023, recording one tackle after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent. He was waived in the summer by the team with an injury designation.

The former Navarro Bulldog, Louisiana Ragin' Cajun, and LSU Tiger will bring his 4.55 40-yard dash speed to the Philadelphia secondary.

Garner had 43 tackles and a team-best eight pass breakups in his senior season at LSU.

Harris was waived last week from the active roster and will return once again for Week 18. Harris saw limited time during his time in Philadelphia.

Harris had three quarterback sacks, seven quarterback hits, four tackles for loss, and 21 total tackles in his nine games, with six starts, this season in Carolina.

Released defensive end Tarron Jackson and running back Lew Nichols

Jackson was signed to the practice squad in November and has not seen any game action this season. He was drafted by the team in the sixth round of 2021 and was a member of the Eagles' 2022 team that advanced to Super Bowl LVII on both the active roster and practice squad.

In 2022, he played in five total games, including playoffs. Jackson was on the practice squad for the entirety of the 2023 campaign. He battled for a roster spot in this year's Training Camp and preseason, but was released during the final roster cutdown. Jackson was promptly signed to Carolina's practice squad and eventually promoted to the active roster before being waived on October 15. He played in three games for the Panthers, logging 28 snaps on defense.

Nichols was signed last week to the practice squad after spending Training Camp and the preseason with the team this summer. He originally entered the NFL as a seventh-round pick of the Packers out of Central Michigan in 2023. He joined the Eagles' practice squad in October of his rookie season and finished the year in Philadelphia. He returned on a reserve/future deal in 2024.

Nichols (5-10, 220 pounds) rushed for 3,061 yards, added 575 receiving yards, and scored 29 total touchdowns in 32 games at Central Michigan. He was the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2021. – Written by Liam Wichser
