This is Week 3 of Training Camp with all signs pointing to the preseason schedule. The games begin on Friday at Baltimore and then the Eagles spend most of next week at New England for a joint practice day and then preseason game No. 2 on Thursday night. The regular-season opener is exactly one month from today.
Things are going to a new level in a hurry.
It is very difficult to ascertain a depth chart or anything like that because, quite frankly, everything is so fluid. Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio has given a lot of looks to a lot of players and is continually moving players up and down the depth chart. The offense has more established starters and, thus, fewer questions unanswered, but there are still a lot of decisions to be made in a month's time.
With that, we ramp up to the preseason opener and we provide here a State of the Eagles in Week 3 of Training Camp, 2024 …
1. Let's start with quarterback Jalen Hurts, who has probably had the best Training Camp of his career. Anyone who has watched him for even a single practice would see that he's been sharp, been on point with his timing, and developed a chemistry with his receivers. Hurts has been accurate and really fast in and out of the pocket and with his decision making. Not sure what more there is to say other than Hurts appears to be loving the offensive scheme and everything and everyone that is working around him. Hurts has clearly enjoyed himself and his interaction with the fans is, needless to say, sensational. He gets it and is on his game in every way.
2. There is no clear-cut picture after starters A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith at wide receiver, so these three preseason games are going to be of utmost importance. Players have rotated in and out of that No. 3 spot and it sure seems like it is wide open for roster spots three through five or six (number of wide receivers the Eagles might keep on the 53-man roster). So, yes, the preseason games matter a lot (just a reminder, the Eagles will air on COZI-TV on Friday night in the Philadelphia area). "It's very fluid and my job is to get players ready. All of them," Wide Receivers Coach Aaron Moorehead said on Sunday. "I've seen a lot of good things and now we're entering a new phase. The preseason is a lot different. It means a lot and the players are going to have opportunities to win jobs and roles on this team. We all have an open mind here."
3. Who are the backups along the offensive line? This is another area that bears watching in the preseason games. There is still the matter of who earns the starting right guard job, and with Tyler Steen limited because of an ankle injury, the Eagles have rotated through a handful of players there – Mekhi Becton and Brett Toth included – and that position remains a competition. How much can the Eagles expect from 2024 draft picks Trevor Keegan and Dylan McMahon, for example? How does Matt Hennessy, a veteran who has started at multiple positions in his career, help the depth of the offensive line? Fred Johnson played his way onto the roster in last year's preseason and has a chance to do the same this year.
4. Running back Kenneth Gainwell is one of the most improved players on this roster. He's bigger, faster, and stronger than last season. He runs hard and has excellent footwork. That's all. He deserves some kudos.
5. What can you say about a defense when there have been only a few "live" periods and none with the projected starters or backups? Again, the preseason is going to play big for Fangio as he sets his rotation across the board, and even with that, it's fair to say that it could take a few games for this defense to really settle in.
The Eagles battled the heat and each other for nearly two hours on Monday in their final fully padded practice before Friday's preseason opener at the Baltimore Ravens.
6. Great competition at cornerback, where Fangio continues to rotate players in and out of the "starting" spot opposite Darius Slay. Again, the preseason is going to dictate a lot about how the cornerback depth chart shakes out. One note here: No. 1 draft pick Quinyon Mitchell is a very talented player and that's obvious to see. He is playing good football and the preseason will be a terrific test for him as he makes his bid for a big role in the defense.
7. C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Reed Blankenship appear to have very good chemistry working as the No. 1 tandem at safety and CJGJ is very much at home with the Eagles. His energy is infectious. He helped the Eagles reach Super Bowl LVII. He's a good, physical, get-to-the-ball safety. Blankenship makes all the right calls, plays hard and physical, and has his hands on the football a lot. Depth there? Developing, and that includes James Bradberry taking reps at safety along with Avonte Maddox.
8. How will the Eagles handle the new kickoff rules? To be determined, and there will be no concrete answers maybe all season. It could depend on the opponent. Jake Elliott can certainly kickoff to a spot, or he can bounce it down the field. Anything is possible. The Eagles have not shown a thing in this Training Camp.
9. The name you hear more and more is Zack Baun, the free-agency signee from New Orleans. He was an under-the-radar player there, but he could be a factor in the Eagles' linebacker picture and on special teams.
10. What will Head Coach Nick Sirianni decide as far as his starters playing in the preseason? Still to be determined, but he didn't play many of them in the past two preseasons and the Eagles started 8-0 (2022) and 10-1 (2023), so his methods certainly worked. The joint practice with New England is seen as a preseason game, so we will see how Sirianni and coordinators Moore and Fangio want to play things in the games against Baltimore, New England, and Minnesota.
