Spadaro: Defense enjoys a Giant feast with 8 sacks

Sometimes, you just need to eat. The hunger is overwhelming and you get to the table and you eat. And you eat. And you don't slow down.

That's what the Eagles are hopeful is happening with a defense that has been satisfying its appetite in a big way the last two weeks.

After registering six quarterback sacks in the opening four games, the Eagles have been all over opposing signal callers like a cheap suit in the last two – picking up five sacks in the 20-16 win over the Cleveland Browns at Lincoln Financial Field and then harassing the New York Giants for eight sacks in Sunday's 28-3 victory. The Eagles now have 19 quarterback sacks in six games, tied for eighth-most in the NFL.

Maybe it's true an old NFL adage that quarterback sacks come in bunches.

"I like to think of it this way," said defensive end Josh Sweat, who has a quarterback sack in each of the last three games and who is tied with defensive tackle Jalen Carter for the team lead with 3. "We're as good as what we just put on display. Our identity carries on to the next week. We're looking dominant. Two weeks, no points, no scores (no touchdowns allowed in the wins over the Browns and Giants). Everybody up right now. We're looking good. We're feeling good."

The Eagles felt good about their front seven and the possibilities with depth and talent built up through the NFL Draft and in free agency through recent seasons, and even after a bit of a slow start in the sack department, the team kept working hard and pushing and now they are seeing all of that effort pay off.

End Bryce Huff, signed in free agency last spring, has 1.5 quarterback sacks in the last two games and his speed off the edge is making a difference. Veteran Brandon Graham, in his 15th year, has been around the football all season in the rotation at defensive end. Edge player Nolan Smith, in his second season, has made a big leap and has been tough to handle the last couple of weeks, and now he has two quarterback sacks and 15 total tackles and has been able to impact things with his burst and effort.

Rookie Jalyx Hunt entered the fun on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, registering his first career sack.

Things are definitely on the upswing for the defensive line as well as the entire defense that has been adding in a blitz here and there with great success.

"They come in bunches, man. I'm just happy to see it," Graham said. "We've got to stay with it. You can't be satisfied. You've got to keep going because we've got so much ball left. We're figuring out our identity and I'm just proud of the guys on how we stayed together. It could have gone the other way."

Said Huff: "It's a great feeling knowing that the whole D-line is getting back there, knowing that the whole D-line is producing, and even the linebackers are getting back there affecting the quarterback."

It's everyone, really. In addition to Carter creating havoc inside, the Eagles are getting good push from tackles Jordan Davis and Milton Williams, and second-year man Moro Ojomo and young veteran Thomas Booker have added energy and production in reserve with their outstanding first steps and the effort they've brought.

The vision the Eagles had when they put together this 53-man roster is coming into focus and now the next step is taking it on the road again against Cincinnati, a team that has as many explosive offensive weapons as any team in the NFL.

It won't be an easy one.

"We understand that," Graham said. "Long, long season. We have to do it every week. But, you know, it's a feeling like when you get a taste, you want more. You have to stay hungry and keep grinding and then when it's time to get after it, you do it. We're finishing now. We have to keep working hard and keep pushing."

Said Carter, who picked up a pair of sacks in the win over New York: "I got two sacks. I'm happy. Now it's time to move on to next week, watch film for next week. You can never be satisfied."

Saquon Barkley makes his return to MetLife Stadium for the first time as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. The former No. 2 overall pick of the New York Giants is a key storyline as the Eagles (3-2) look for a win in their first NFC East matchup of the season, while the Giants (2-4) try to climb out of last place in the division.
