Vick Knows He Must Play Smarter

Quarterback Michael Vick pointed out on Thursday that in his three games back in the lineup since returning from a rib injury that he doesn't have 100 rushing yards combined.

It turns out, Vick was pretty much only half right. Vick has rushed for 51 yards and oddly enough his only touchdown of the season in the wins over Miami, New York and Dallas. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said on Thursday that Vick needs to improve in two areas looking ahead to 2012 - protecting his body and the football.

Vick admitted that he has been "real cautious" with his body since his return to the lineup. The NFL's all-time leader in rushing yards among quarterbacks joked at his locker following practice that he's drinking lots of milk and putting pressure on the company that makes his pads, Unequal Technologies, to come up with a solution in the offseason to help him last all 16 games.

But Vick knows that a big part of the solution is inside his helmet.

"It's all about keeping my body strong, being smart," Vick said. "There's a time to go all-out and a time to be conservative and preserve yourself. You just have to be smart in that regard."

However, it was in the pocket where Vick incurred his most recent injury. Vick broke two ribs after he quickly delivered a pass on the second play of the Arizona game back on November 13. Ironically enough, Vick played in all 16 games back in 2006 and rushed for over 1,000 yards that season.

Vick has also dealt with 13 interceptions this season, which ties his career high. Vick said one or two of them happened when he threw across his body and shouldn't have. He noted about five or six came on tipped passes. Vick acknowledged that they are going to happen from time to time, but it's the resolve to bounce back from them that is the key.

"I take the blame for my share of turnovers," Vick said. "It's all how you come back from it, how you approach it, the type of approach you take."

Vick doesn't care about rushing yards. He cares about one thing and that's the end result of the game.

"I think right now what matters most is winning, week in and week out," Vick said. "I can have 120 passing yards as long as we win that game. That's all that matters."
