Head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder said that there is "no timeframe" in determining when quarterback Michael Vick will return to the lineup after suffering a concussion Sunday night against Atlanta. However, Burkholder said that it would be "not fair" to make any declarative statements regarding Vick's status for Sunday's home opener against the Giants.
Vick suffered the concussion late in the third quarter as his helmet collided with the helmet of offensive tackle Todd Herremans. Burkholder said that Vick's neck whipped and he bit his tongue which drew blood. Vick was taken to the locker room for testing and the results showed that Vick was "a little bit off." The Eagles decided to act on the side of caution by keeping him out for the remainder of the game.
On the plane ride back to Philadelphia, Vick told Burkholder and head coach Andy Reid that he was fine. Vick was told to rest at home until later on Monday and he could possibly begin the protocol to be cleared to return to the practice field which includes an MRI, ImPACT testing and a visit with an independent neurologist. The testing and doctor's visit will take place over the next couple of days pending on how Vick progresses.
Mike Kafka replaced Vick on Sunday night and was 7-of-9 for 72 yards and nearly led the Eagles to a come-from-behind win. Reid said that Kafka's last series "was beautiful," which included a 43-yard pass to wide receiver Jeremy Maclin. The drive ended with a dropped pass by Maclin on a fourth-and-4 from the Atlanta 22-yard line.
Reid was brutally honest with himself and said that he was too conservative with the playcalling after Kafka initially entered the game. The Eagles were in a goal-to-go situation when Kafka entered the game and scored on a LeSean McCoy 2-yard run. On Kafka's first full series, the Eagles ran the ball twice, threw a short pass to McCoy and a wide receiver screen to Jeremy Maclin before punting.
Despite playing well, Reid did not say whether Kafka or Vince Young would start if Vick can't play. Young was inactive as he works his way back from a hamstring injury. Reid said that Young is making progress and is "getting close to 100 percent."
Other injury notes: tight end Brent Celek has a low back strain, defensive end Trent Cole has a strained tendon in his hand, defensive tackle Juqua Parker has a high ankle sprain and defensive end Darryl Tapp continues to recover from his pec strain.
