Head coach Andy Reid had an explanation for quarterback Michael Vick's uneven performance in Sunday's loss to Arizona - broken ribs.
Reid announced on Monday that Vick broke two ribs on the second offensive play of the game. On a second-and-2, Vick took the snap out of the shotgun and delivered a quick strike to tight end Brent Celek. Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington came off the right edge unblocked and drilled Vick after he threw the ball.
Vick "really didn't think twice about" whether he was staying in the game or not. Reid praised Vick's toughness and said that the the quarterback "did some good things" and the Eagles were in position to score and win the game at the end. Vick was 14-of-36 for 128 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in the 21-17 loss.
Will Vick play Sunday against the Giants? "We'll see," Reid said. Reid would not make any announcement regarding Vick's availability for practice Wednesday nor would he name a starter in Vick's absence.
The injury did not happen on the fourth-quarter play where Vick scrambled for a 7-yard gain before he was hit by Cardinals defensive end Darnell Dockett. Vick had the wind knocked out of him and missed one play before returning the next offensive series.
Also, guard King Dunlap suffered a concussion. Dunlap made his first career start at guard in place of the injured Evan Mathis. Reid said that Mathis' toe was improving and he did some rehab work Monday afternoon.
Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie suffered a high-ankle sprain and will struggle to play this Sunday against New York. Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin has an AC (shoulder) joint sprain as well as a slight hamstring strain, but Reid said the shoulder is the more serious of the two injuries.
