Football fans all over the Internet are abuzz over the photo that unveiled the Dallas Cowboys' draft board.
It's rare, although the Cowboys gave some insight to their board just a few years ago, that fans get to see exactly how a team had the players ranked. We hear head coach Andy Reid and general manager Howie Roseman talk about how they had grades on certain players. For example, the Eagles had a first-round grade on wide receiver DeSean Jackson, but were able to get him in the second round anyway.
By pulling the curtain off the Cowboys' board, fans can compare where an actual team had players ranked against the draft experts who provide the bulk of the information to the public. And it also provides an opportunity for fans of other teams to see where Dallas ranked the players that their team selected.
Of course, Eagles fans might be quick to point out that first-round pick Brandon Graham didn't even have a first-round grade on the Cowboys' board. Defensive end Daniel Te'o-Nesheim? The Eagles' third-round pick had a fifth-round grade on Dallas' board.
What gives?
Different eyes are going to see different things, but you have to remember that a team is going to evaluate a player based on how he fits into their scheme. The Eagles run a base 4-3 defense and the Cowboys run a 3-4. We all know that. But Graham, who started the draft process as a hybrid player, is more developed as a 4-3 end rather than a 3-4 outside linebacker. And Te'o-Nesheim? The Eagles value him as someone who can play on the edge and inside in the nickel defense. Again, probably not an ideal fit in Dallas.
"He's another guy who was a late-riser who I think was going to go soon," said general manager Howie Roseman.
So before fans jump off the cliff because another team didn't hold the Eagles draft picks in high regard, remember that teams have to evaluate the talent based on how it will help them - and not another team - the most.
