The Eagles saw enough from wide receiver/punt returner Britain Covey in his first week of practice since suffering a shoulder injury in the Week 3 win over New Orleans to activate him off Injured Reserve on Saturday as the team heads to Los Angeles for a Sunday night showdown with the Rams.
There was an open roster spot after the team placed Bryce Huff on Injured Reserve on Friday after the defensive end was scheduled to undergo a wrist procedure this week.
In addition, the Eagles removed Covey's questionable game status after he practiced fully all week.
"I'm just happy to be back," Covey said earlier this week. "I've worked hard and progressed nicely. It feels good to open the practice window, being out there, competing."
"He's done a nice job," Head Coach Nick Sirianni said on Friday. "We'll see where he is by the end of the day. We don't have to make any decisions quite yet, but he's done a nice job. Nice to get him back out there. Can't stress enough how good of a teammate Britain Covey is. Guys like being around him, so it's nice having him back out there in the mix and interacting with his teammates on the practice field."
Covey said the timing of the injury was unfortunate as his role on offense was expanding. He already has a career-high seven receptions and nearly matched his offensive snap count from all of last season in the three games he's played in.
Covey's biggest role has come as a punt returner, where last year he led the league with 417 punt return yards, averaging 14.4 yards per return and registering a long of 54 yards. Cooper DeJean has picked up the punt return duties in Covey's absence. DeJean's averaged nearly 12 yards per return, good for second in the NFC.
"They are both very fearless as punt returners," Special Teams Coordinator Michael Clay said earlier this week. "Obviously Cooper, bigger body and he surprises you with his physique, bigger body and he does have some breakaway speed. Whereas Covey is very cerebral and finds different lanes and his vision is very good in terms of that. They complement themselves. Cooper being more of a bigger body getting downhill but Covey is no slouch either. He likes to one-cut stretch and get down the field. Having those two complementary-type individuals who catch the ball very well off the punter's foot gives them a head start more than anything else. We don't have to worry about it. They know, all right, this ball is going this way. I can get over there and race over and assess the situation."
The Eagles also elevated tight end C.J. Uzomah from the practice squad. This is the second week in a row in which Uzomah, a 10-year veteran, has been elevated. He made his Eagles debut in the Thursday night win over Washington, playing three snaps on offense.
