A captain. A playmaker. A champion.
The Eagles acquired all three when they announced on Monday that they have agreed to terms with linebacker Devin White on a one-year contract.
The fifth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft out of LSU, White spent the first five seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he became just one of two players, alongside Pro Football Hall of Famer Brian Urlacher, to accumulate at least 500 tackles, 20 sacks, and 10 takeaways in his first five NFL seasons dating back to 2000.
Named a captain for the fourth time in his career this past season, the 26-year-old White possesses "a quick-twitch trigger and rare pursuit speed to close gaps." The 6-foot, 237-pound White was a second-team All-Pro selection in 2020 when the Buccaneers won the Super Bowl and a Pro Bowl honoree the following year.
Since entering the league in 2019, White is first among all NFL inside linebackers with 64 QB hits, second in sacks with 23, and tied for second with nine fumble recoveries. In total, White has tallied 566 career tackles, 23 sacks, three interceptions, 21 pass deflections, six forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries, and two touchdowns. He has started all but one of his 76 career regular-season games.
White is the lone NFL player since 2012 to amass at least 100 tackles and nine sacks in a season when he did so in that 2020 Super Bowl run. In 2021, White hoarded 18 total tackles and two sacks in a game against Washington, notching the second-highest amount of tackles while generating multiple sacks in the same game since 1994.
In addition to his leadership on the field, White has been recognized for his off-field charitable work through his Get Live 45 Foundation. He was a finalist for the prestigious NFLPA Alan Page Community Award in 2023, which has been won by five Eagles in the past – most recently Rodney McLeod in 2022.
The nation's top linebacker and a first-team All-American in his junior season at LSU, White posted the fifth-faster 40-yard dash time (tied at 4.42 seconds) among all linebackers at the NFL Scouting Combine dating back to 2013.
White is the latest of a series of defensive additions by the Eagles in free agency, including linebacker Zack Baun, safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and defensive end Bryce Huff for new Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio to unleash.
