The Eagles picked up a crucial win Sunday, as they defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars, 24-18, at Wembley Stadium in London in the franchise's first international regular-season game.
Last week, the Eagles couldn't move the ball or get a defensive stop when it mattered most and it cost them a win. In London, however, the Eagles forced a turnover on downs with less than five minutes to play and closed out the game on offense.
Despite throwing an interception and losing a fumble, quarterback Carson Wentz turned in another stellar outing, completing 21 of his 30 pass attempts for 286 yards and three touchdowns. Oddly enough, his first completion of the day was to himself.
Wide receiver Jordan Matthews led all receivers with 93 yards on four receptions. Tight ends Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert each had touchdown receptions, as did running back Wendell Smallwood.
In a recurring theme this season, the game came down to an Eagles defensive stand. With 5:08 to play, quarterback Blake Bortles and the Jaguars took over at their own 27 following an Eagles three-and-out. On fourth-and-1 from the 36, Bortles scrambled for 4 yards to move the chains.
The Jaguars then faced a fourth-and-2 at their own 48 following two incompletions. Bortles was pressured and fired an incomplete pass into space, giving the Eagles the ball back with 3:36 to play. The Eagles pressured Bortles throughout the game and finished with four sacks on the day.
A 13-yard completion to Matthews and runs by Smallwood forced two Jaguars timeouts and helped the Eagles drain the clock.
Although the Eagles pulled out the win, they were marred by missed opportunities in the first half. On the first drive of the game, Wentz scrambled for a first down and then found Matthews on third down for 31 yards. But in Jacksonville territory, a sack-fumble gave the ball to Jacksonville. The Jaguars turned that into three points.
The next drive was more of the same, as Wentz scrambled for a first down and then found wide receiver Nelson Agholor for a 39-yard pass to the Jacksonville 24. But two plays later, Wentz was intercepted by Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey in the end zone on a pass intended for tight end Josh Perkins.
The two teams traded field goals in the second quarter, including a 57-yarder from Jacksonville kicker Josh Lambo. The Jaguars had a chance to take firm control of the game, as they had the lead and the ball with less than two minutes remaining in the half, but the Eagles flipped the script and got a takeaway of their own.
Avonte Maddox popped the ball from Jaguars wide receiver Keelan Cole and safety Malcolm Jenkins picked it up to give the Eagles the ball with favorable field position.
Wentz marched the Eagles into Jaguars territory by tucking the ball and running. He then found Goedert, who evaded tacklers and rumbled into the end zone for a 32-yard touchdown, giving the Eagles 10-6 lead with 29 seconds left in the half. The Eagles held the advantage heading into the break.
On the Eagles' first drive of the second half, Wentz threw a screen pass to Smallwood, who found space down the left sideline and got into the end zone thanks to a key downfield block by Shelton Gibson. The score capped off a 95-yard drive that gave the Eagles a 17-6 lead with 8:38 left in the third. Smallwood finished with 42 yards receiving and 24 yards rushing.
The Jaguars followed with a quick scoring drive ending with an 11-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Dede Westbrook. The two-point conversion was no good and made the score 17-12 with 4:33 to play in the third. After an Eagles three-and-out, the Jaguars marched again and hit a field goal to make it 17-15 with 13:14 left in the game.
The Eagles' offense did what it couldn't last week and responded. A 36-yard completion to Matthews, scrambles by Wentz, and runs by running back Josh Adams (who finished with a team-high 61 yards rushing) set up a 5-yard touchdown pass to Ertz, which gave the Eagles a two-score lead with fewer than 10 minutes to play.
The Jaguars marched again but had to settle for a field goal after a third-and-goal pass was bobbled and eventually dropped in the end zone by wide receiver DJ Chark. It made the score 24-18 with seven minutes to play.
The Jaguars got the ball back after another Eagles three-and-out. But the defense made a play when it counted and the Eagles closed out a crucial win after failing to do so in important games this season.
With the victory, the Eagles improve to 4-4 and have momentum going into bye week. The week off gives the team a chance to get healthy as tackle Lane Johnson and cornerback Jalen Mills both exited the game early due to injury.
The Eagles return to the field on November 11 when they host the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field.
